Introduction Of Robots/Robotics

Module 1: INTRODUCTION OF
ROBOTS/ROBOTICS

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Familiarize Robot and Robotics.
2. Learn the boundaries of Artificial Intelligence.
3. Know the Connections between robotics and some related subjects.

Introduction

Robotics is a subject without sharp boundaries, at numerous points on its periphery it

merges into fields such as artificial intelligence, automation and remote control, so it is
hard to define it concisely. It’s the branch of engineering whose topic is, obviously, robots,
but there is no universal agreement on what constitutes robot, although many meanings
have been proposed, some of which are given later.
The boundaries of robotics aren’t only hazy but shifting. Robots are evolving quickly, and

Definitions of 'robot' and 'robotics'

the word 'robot' around 1917 with Karel Capek is described in many books on robots; a
brief but suitable account is given elsewhere.

 Robot is reprogrammable and multifunctional manipulator, devised for the

TELEOPERATOR, but in the view of Vertut and Coiffet (see bibliographic notes) a

subject name telechirics, by M.W. Thring as preferable because both halves are the same
language: Greek for 'distant' and 'hand'. (He also invented the term 'sceptrology', meaning
the technology of mechanical aids for the disabled.)
