6. ALL the work in SECTION A must be done on the appropriate paper.

7. ALL the work in SECTION B must be done in the ANSWER BOOK.

8. All loose sheets must be numbered correctly and put in sequence inside the
ANSWER BOOK.

9. Candidates must strictly apply the rules and methods as stipulated in the
Standard System of Measuring Building Work.

SECTION A

QUESTION 1

ADDENDUM B (attached) shows the front and sectional views of a garden wall and
gate.

The specifications for the different trades are as follows:

EARTHWORKS: - Clean the site 1 500 metres all around the


garden wall.
- Excavation in soft soil

CONCRETE: - 15 MPa

MASONRY: - Ordinary bricks built in stretcher bond


- Face brick on both sides, two courses below
ground level
- 1 : 4 cement mortar

PRECAST CONCRETE: - Coping size 430 × 150 mm

CARPENTRY AND JOINERY: - 76 × 110 mm solid timber doorframe

Measure the works strictly according to the question numbers and measuring lists.

Use dimension paper to answer QUESTIONS 1 to 4.

1.1 Calculate the length and width of the area to be cleaned. (3)

1.2 Measure the item for the site clearance. (2)

1.3 Determine the dimensions for the length and depth of the trench. (2)

Answer ALL the questions in SECTION B in the ANSWER BOOK.

QUESTION 6

Prepare the interim valuation for the SECOND partial payment to the contractor.

ALL calculated amounts should be rounded off to the nearest 10 rand.

The summary of the bills of quantities is shown on ADDENDUM A (attached).

 The contract period is NINE months.


 100% of the earthwork is complete.
 25% of the concrete work is complete.
 40% of the masonry is complete.
 The value of unfixed material on site is R6 500,00.
 A retention fee of 10% is withheld.
 The contractor was paid a total amount of R182 350,00 for the FIRST month. [10]
