The scene marks the beginning of the climax of the play.
Drained from straying to find Ferdinand,
Alonso, Gonzalo, Antonio, Sebastian, Adriano, Francisco rest at another part of the island. Antonio reminds Sebastian to not forego their plan just because they had failed to do it once. They conspire to do it that night, as the others because of being tired “cannot use their vigilance,/ As when they are fresh.” The spirits on the command of Prospero, taking form as several strange shapes render a banquet of viands in front of all present. Prospero is present as well, but invisible to the court members. They are pleasantly surprised and Alonso thinks that god has sent “kind keepers” to protect them. The scene seemed like a living drollery and they could now believe that unicorns, phoenix in Arabia and dew-lapp’d mountaineers exist. But as soon as they move towards the banquet to eat, Ariel, dressed like a Harpy appears in front of them, “clasps his wings upon the table; and, with a quaint device, the banquet vanishes.” Ariel then confronts the three men of sin: Alonso, Antonio and Sebastian about their conspiracy against prospero 12 yrs ago. He says that “the powers, delaying, but not forgetting” as he and his fellows “are Ministers of Fate”. Ariel says that the destiny’s instrument had caused them to be swallowed by the sea and even the never-surfeited sea had to belch them out on this uninhabited island. That they are so low as to live with other humans. So ariel has made them go dreanged and lose their sanity. Through ariel the announcement of “Lingering perdition” is pronounced. There is only one way of being saved from the rage of avenging powers which is sincere repentance and ensuing a pure life. That is why they were robbed of their peace. Alonso was deprived/bereft of his son. If they fail to repent for their sins, The wraths of the powers/fate will fall upon them on this “desolate isle”. After ariel vanishes, Prospero commends him because of his good-life portrayal of a harpy and to not depart from his instructions. And to make his enemies entangle in frenzy and dismay. Alonso witnessing ariel’s confrontation siffers from pangs of conscience and is guilt ridden realizing the consequnces of hhis treachery 12 yrs ago which lead to his son to be bedded in the ooze. Sebastian and Antonio remain unapologetic and remorseless of their actions. Gonzalo asks Adriano and fraanciso to follow the three to delay what they might do, as theyre all distressed with mental disturbance and uncontrollable emotions.
