EDUCATION- a social institution where the people are taught of the basic academic knowledge, learning
skills, and cultural norms to prepare them for the needs of the society. It helps shaping and equipping the
minds of the young generation with the necessary critical skills and values that they can use to challenge or
support the existing knowledge system and practices.

In the past, where people are only hunting and gathering food, education was already embedded in their
everyday lives. Young people learn from their elders by joining their bands of men hunting or gathering
food or of women cooking and weaving clothes for their families.
SOCIAL PRESERVATION

Education helps in the reproduction of the universal rules, beliefs and practices of a particular society by
allowing them to perform a several social responsibilities and roles which are useful for the society as a
whole. Emeli Durkheim called the education system as miniature society where the students can acquire
knowledge and technical skills they will need in interacting with the other members of their society.

Talcott Parsons – Education system prepares the students in their future roles in the society by teaching
them the universalistic standards which are applied to all members to the society.

Vasiliki Kantzara – Socialization denotes teaching and instilling in pupils dominant values and norms.

SOCIAL REPRODUCTION

1. Social Class – Many sociologists and philosophers argued that education is the tool of the dominant
classes in preserving or enhancing the social gap between the people in the society. It creates
inequality in the society as it allows the gap between the rich and the poor to grow bigger and wider.
2. Gender Stereotypes – This refers to the restriction for some specific genders to attend school, or the
discrimination they experienced inside the school related to their gender types.
3. Racial/Ethnic Discrimination – It happens when a specific race feels superior over another, restricting
the latter’s chances to experience education.

CULTURAL REPRODUCTION

Pierre Bourdieu argued that the major role of education is cultural reproduction which involves
transmission of the culture as a whole to the next generation. He introduced the term “habitus”, which
involves the lifestyle, values, dispositions, and expectations of a particular social group. According to
Economist and Sociologist Samuel Bowle and Herbert Gintis, the major role of education in capitalist
societies is the reproduction of labor power.
