HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT IN

THE MEDIEVAL/MIDDLE AGE

The compass as we know it today was developed


and refined during the Middle Ages, this allowed
sailors and travelers to determine their direction
using the Earth's magnetic field. It is a navigation
and orientation tool that consists of a magnetized
needle that aligns with the Earth's magnetic field,
marking the cardinal directions.

History Summary
2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE- The first compass-like
devices were discovered in China during the Han Dynasty.
"south-pointing fish" or "south-pointing chariots" -
primarily used for divination and geomancy.
Lodestone (a naturally magnetized mineral)

Europe_Middle Age- The compass was introduced in Europe


and began to take on its contemporary form and was used for
navigation in the Middle Ages. The needle was pivot-mounted,
allowing it to move freely and point in the magnetic north-south
direction.
12th and 13th centuries- the compass for navigation grew
more common in Europe, notably among sailors and mariners.
14th century- became standard tools on board ships.
