S.6 NUTRITION TOPICAL TEST 2022

TIME 1 HOUR 30 MINUTES
Attempt all questions.

1. In an experiment, equal numbers of leaf discs were cut out from leaves of two
groups of plants of the same species. Group A was obtained from a habitat that is
in open light while group B was obtained from under the canopy of a forest. The
discs were then floated in water containing sodium hydrogen carbonate and the
rate of uptake (+ ) and release(-) of carbon dioxide at varying light intensities was
determined.
The results are shown in figure 1. Use this information and figure 1 to answer the
questions that follow.

(a) Describe the change in rate of carbon dioxide release and uptake
for group B plants.
(b) Compare the effect of light intensity on the rate of carbon dioxide
uptake and release in the two groups of plants.
(c). Explain the changes in the rate of carbon dioxide uptake for group A
plants.
(d) From the figure; explain
(i) why the rate of carbon dioxide release decrease with increase in
light intensity.
(ii) the advantage of having a lower compensation point for group B in
their habitat.
(iii) Suggest and explain how carbon dioxide uptake would be affected if
the stems of group A were used instead.
(e) Explain why each of the following were done;
(i) Addition of sodium hydrogen carbonate to water
(ii Plants of the same species but grown in different habitats were used.
2. The graph in the figure below shows the absorption spectra of Chlorophyll a,
xanthophyll, and Bacteriochlorophyll of Purple Sulphur bacteria at different
wave lengths of light.
Xanthophyll

Chlorophyll a Bacteriochlorophyl

(a) Describe the differing abilities of the photosynthetic pigments

above to absorbing different wave lengths of light.
(b)Explain how the differing abilities of absorbing light by the
different photosynthetic pigments suit the purple Sulphur
bacteria to survive underneath sea weeds in rock pools on sea
shores.
(c) How different is photosynthesis in green plants different from
purple Sulphur bacteria.
(d)Explain how chemosynthesis occurs in nitrifying bacteria.
