Terrain Slopes
Y Contour
Slope = tan ѳ = Y Interval

X = ?? * Scale)
Measured distance = 2cm

Terrain Slopes

Slope = tan ѳ = * 100 = 100%
o 2
Ѳ = 45

 Slope can be calculated for

different location between the two contours
 Slope will vary in each location
 Slope is always classified in different classes

 An Example:
Landuse Suitability Scale 1:100
0-4% V. Gentle slope Agriculture, Industrial
4-8 % Gentle Slope Residential
8-12% Med Slope Tourism, Residential, Services
12-25% Steep Slope Entertainment, Green spaces
25 – 40% Very Steep Slope No development
** The categories are not fixed and depends on terrain relief and the objective of the study

Contouring Applications
Cut & Fill Applications

 Calculation of the cut-and-fill volumes is an essential component to any site

development project

 Topographic data is required to estimate cut and-fill volumes

 The basic calculation is the difference between the desired elevation and the
original elevations

Contouring Applications
Cut & Fill Applications
 Using the elevation data and the grid system, a three dimensional model of the terrain (
TIN, DEM) & the cut-and-fill volumes can be constructed
 Volume equals the average of the cell height times the area of the cell
2
- Cell Area C (50 )(50 ) C 2,500 m
3
VolumeC (2500) * 101.5 C 253,750 m

Cut & Fill Applications
 Development at this site requires that this area be at an elevation of 101
 Cut/Fill Volumes = Proposed Volume – Original Volume
2 2
- Cell Area C (50 )(50 ) C 2,500 m - Cell Area C (50 )(50 ) C 2,500 m

98+100+102+105 101+101+101+101
- Av. Height = = 101.5 m - Av. Height = = 101

VolumeC (2500) * 101.5 C 253,750 m - VolumeC (2500) * 101 C 252,500 m

Cut/ Fill Volume = 252500 – 253750 = - 1250 m3 ( CUT Volume )
