Past progressive Tense

Twelve verb tenses:

Also known as past continuous

The pattern in making a Past Progressive Tense statement is:

(subject + was/were + verb in present progressive or the -ing form)

Past Progressive is used to refer to actions continuously happening at a certain moment in

the past.

Example:
● We were watering the plants this morning.
● It was raining last night.
● They were arguing about something.

Past Progressive is used for two actions happening at the same time in the past.

Example:
● She was cooking while her younger sisters were playing.
● Tommy was crying while his father was scolding him.
● I was reading while Beth was practicing her speech.

Past Progressive is used for interruptions while certain actions are happening in the past.

Example:
● They were walking home when it rained.
● When her friends came, she was taking a shower.
● I was washing the dishes when the phone rang.

Negative:
(subject + was/were not + verb in present progressive)

Pasado progresivo se utiliza para referirse a acciones que suceden continuamente en un

momento determinado del pasado.

Ejemplo:

Pasado progresivo se utiliza para dos acciones que ocurren al mismo tiempo en el pasado.

Ejemplo:
● Ella cocinaba mientras sus hermanas menores jugaban.
● Tommy lloraba mientras su padre lo regañaba.
● Estaba leyendo mientras Beth practicaba su discurso.

Pasado Progresivo se utiliza para interrupciones mientras ocurren ciertas acciones en el

pasado.

Ejemplo:
● Iban caminando a casa cuando llovió.
● Cuando llegaron sus amigas, ella se estaba duchando.
● Estaba lavando los platos cuando sonó el teléfono.

Negativo:
(Sujeto + no era / no estaba + verbo en presente progresivo)

Ejemplo:
