THE RISE OF ISLAMIC STATES


Dar-al-Islam means .

In the mid-8th century a new Islamic caliphate came into power in the Middle East and North Africa known as the
Caliphate which was unified by the language and traditions.

Around the turn of the 13th century some newly-converted Muslims, who also happened to be
, invaded India.

It’s important to know they were Turks because as such they became the third major group to be the carriers of
Islam after the and the .

They established a Muslim political state in India called the in 1206.

Religiously, Indians were mostly and that had structured Indian for thousands
of years.

Islam is , which means they worship one God. Hinduism, on the other hand was
, which means they believed in many gods. A key tenant of Islam is the prohibition
against representing Allah in any form. Hindus generated endless of their
gods. Muhammed taught the social of all Muslims. Hinduism separated society into a rigid
system whose hierarchical levels were impenetrable by those of different castes.

Even though the Muslims remained in power, they were largely unable to the Indian culture en masse.

THE SPREAD OF ISLAM


A group of Muslim missionaries known as the , embraced a form of Islam that emphasized more
