Abstract
In this note we give a very preliminary estimation of the suspension thermal noise using the loss
angles of the suspension system extrapolated by the violin modes quality factors.

Figure 1: Quality factors of the violin modes measured on the North Arm suspensions. Purple dots refer to the
ITM and red dots to the ETM. We show also the quality factors of the violins of the steel wires suspensions used
during O2 (orange empty dots). A comparison with the quality factors measured on the Virgo+ monolithic
suspension is given (green empty dots).

1 The violin modes Q of the North ITM and ETM

In the Figure 1 the quality factors of the violin modes in the suspensions of the North arm are
plotted up to the 17th harmonic (the complete table is at the end of this document).

The measurement campaign was performed on February 2nd 2018, during the commissioning of
the north arm. The marionette motor was moved of one step to excite the wire modes. The GPS
times are:

1201607420 excitation on the ETM suspension

1201614400 excitation on the ITM suspension

The measures Qs are compared with the violin Qs of the monolithic suspensions in Virgo+ (see [1]
for a complete description). Also the quality factors of steel suspensions violins used during O2 are
shown as a comparison (the past evaluation of the thermal noise with steel wires is given in the
note [2]).

The frequency behavior of Qs and their values is very similar to the Virgo+ suspension system and
it is very likely that the behavior at the highest harmonics is explained by the marionette bulk
resonances. On the other hand the lowest violin harmonics are influenced by the upper clamping
system of the silica wires on the marionette, as we already have found for Virgo+ ([1]). The FEM
analysis to understand better this aspect is being carried on.

In the meanwhile, we have focused our attention to the highest measured Qs to estrapolate the
violin mode losses and give a first preliminary evaluation of the thermal noise of the suspensions
in this configuration.

Assuming that the losses are due only to the fused silica of the wires we have extrapolated the
mean value of the loss angle for the north arm suspensions. We have found that the loss angle is a
factor 30 worst that the nominal one, and the thermal noise curve is shown in the Figure 2 (see

Figure 2: in this plot the expected suspension thermal noise is plotted (red solid curve). It is compared with
nominal suspension thermal (red dotted curve) and with the official sensitivity with 25W laser power. Moreover
the O2 sensitivity curve is shown (black dotted curve).

note [3] for details of the method).

This curve was computed supposing that the north arm suspensions losses are similar to those of
the west arm. To have a definitive scenario, we plan to update it when the measurements of the
violins of the west arm will be available.
