atempt to imagine capitalism by way of imagining the end of the world.”1

Based on the famous leter writen by Pero Vaz de Caminha, Vera Cruz is a copy in video of
an “(im)possible documentary ilm” about Brazil’s discovery. Of the subtracted image we can
only see the “image of the ilm stock”, worn out by the 500 years of age. The sound has also
been removed. What was let, in the end, took the form of text-subitle.

encing is not only economic and poliical, but perhaps - even primarily - a
crisis of representaion. In such a case, it is plausible to ask “what crisis?”.
For photography to succeed in fracturing the homogeneous surface
of Capitalist Realism, perhaps what is needed is the development of a
strategy leading to a New Socially Concerned Photography. Radical prac-
ices are called for, namely: a subversive applicaion of the image’s om-
nipotence and its distribuion not merely through the structures of art or
those of the frequently dependent mass media, but also through social
networks, those avenues of communicaion in which photography main-
tains a privileged posiion. New Socially Concerned Photography must
also address contemporary, currently relevant social issues by means of
strategies which contain within them concrete proposals and not mere-
ly clinical analyses, which are usually diagnosically valuable but hardly
therapeuic. Could New Social Photography, presupposing an increase
in its followers, engender the prerequisites of a change? It is diicult to
foresee. Nevertheless, there remains but litle ime in which to essay it,
while there can be no doubt of the value of the atempt.
