Assignment 3

1. Given the following data for a cylindrical core sample:

Clean, dry weight of sample = 311 gm
Wt. of sample with pores completely filled (100% saturated) with a 1.05 sp.
Gravity brine = 331 gm
Diameter of sample = 4 cm
Length of sample = 10 cm
Compute its porosity.
What is the density of the rock grains?
What gross storage space exists in this rock?

2. A clean and dry core weighing 425 gm was 100% saturated with 1.07 specific
gravity brine. The new weight is 453 gm. The core is 12 cm long and 4 cm in
diameter. Calculate ?

3. A limestone sample weights 241 gm. The limestone sample coated with paraffin
was found weight 249.5 gm. The coated sample when immersed in a partially
filled graduated cylinder displaces 125 cc of water. The density of the paraffin is
0.90 gm/cc. What is the porosity? Is this absolute or effective porosity?

4. Compute porosity and lithology for a core has the following data:
Dry weight = 104.1 gm.
Saturated weight in air = 120.2 gm.
Water density = 1.0 gm/cc.
Saturated weight in water = 64.8 gm.
Is this absolute or effective porosity?
