A solution of Ferrous ammonium sulphate (mohr salt ) has been prepared by dissolving 17.0 gram in one
litre solution . determine the molarity and strength of the given solution of KMnO4 with the help of Mohrs
salt solution.
Theory ; 1. Molecular equation –
2KMnO4-+ 10FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H20 + 8H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 5Fe(SO4)3 + 10 (NH4)2SO4+ 68 H2O
2) ionic equation
MnO4- + 5Fe2+ + 8H+ → Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O
Indicator – KMnO4 is a self indicator.
End point : At the end point almost colourless solution will change in to light pink colour.
Observation table :

S.No. Volume of FAS taken by Burette reading Volume of Concordant

Pippete (v1) Initial Reading Final Reading KMnO4 solution Volume of
(a) (b) is used (b - a) KMnO4 (v2)
1 20 mL
2 20 mL
3 20 mL

Calculation : 1) molarity of FAS:

Molarity = conc. (in gm/lit.)/molar mass , M1 = 17.0/392M
2) molarity of KMnO4 solution :
Molarity balanced equation of the reaction suggests that 1 mole of KMnO 4 completely oxidies 5 moles of
FAS.
5 mole of FAS = 1 mol KMnO4
M1= molarity of mohrs salt solution 17.0/392M
Or M1V1= 5 M2V2
Or V1= vol. of mohrs salt solution = 20 ml
M2 = molarity of kMnO4 solution = ?
M2= ________ M V2= volume of KMnO4 = ________ ml

3) strength of KMnO4 solution gms / litre

Strength in grams / litre = molarity (M2) x molar mass
= ________ x 158 = ________ gL-1
Result: the molarity and strength of given KMnO4 solution are ________ M and strength ________ gL-
respectively.

Practical no. 2
Find the concentration of potassium permanganate solution in gram per liter. For this purpose you are
provided with a standard solution of crystalline oxalic acid of molarity M/40.
Theory : 1) molecular equation –
2KMnO4 + 5(COOH)2.2H2O + 3 H2SO4→ K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 10 CO2 + 18 H2O
2) Ionic equation :
2MnO4- + 5C2O42- + 16 H+ → 2Mn2+ + 10 CO2 + 8 H2O

Aim: To prepare a collodial solution from egg albumin.

Theory: Egg albumin forms hydrophilic sol with water at room temperature. The sol obtained is quite
stable and are not affected by the presence of any impurities.

Chemical: Egg and distilled water

Procedure: Break the egg shell with the help of glass rod carefully and collect the liquid content into a
beaker, Decant only white part of the egg i.e. egg albumin. It is mainly contains hydroprotein. Take 100 ml
of distilled water in a another beaker. Put egg albumin drop wise drop with constant stirring. Filter the
solution flask and labeled it as colloid solution of egg “albumin”.

Precautions:
1. Break the egg carefully
2. Decant only white part of egg
3. String must be contains
4. Use distilled and cold water
5. All apparatus must be neat and clean.
