Method Statement for Monitoring of Concrete Foundations

Q A T A R Date : 06.07.2009

1. PURPOSE
This document describes the methods proposed to be used for the Monitoring of concrete
foundations that will be carried out as part of ASU Construction Works of Qatar Shell GTL Plant
(Pearl) in Ras Laffan Industrial City of Qatar including similar works in TSF Area.

2. SCOPE
This method statement identifies the monitoring activities of concrete foundations during and after
construction.

5. RESPONSIBILITY
5.1. SITE MANAGER
The site manager will provide inputs to the project monitoring plan to ensure that Strategies
& philosophy are properly addressed.
5.2. SURVEYOR
Provide the markings and verify all details and record.

5.3. QA/QC INSPECTOR

Coordinate the monitoring to be done as per the specification and interval.

Maintain all the records and make non-conformity if observed. Inform the Contractor about
non-conformities.

6. METHOD OF EXECUTION
6.1. GENERAL
In order to monitor the concrete foundation, the followings are to be checked and recorded:

 depth, area and volume of each excavation

 encountered soil layers-encountered groundwater level
 data of excavation
 date and results of inspection of the bearing layer
 date of (back) filling
 number of fill layers, compaction procedure
 results of compaction tests
 date of pouring the blinding layer
 date of pouring the foundation

6.2. MONITORING INTERVALS OF FOUNDATIONS

Especially Major foundations on soft soil and weak rock should be evaluated by monitoring
of settlement at intervals of:

 2 to 6 weeks during construction of the superstructure

 6 months during the first two years after construction/water testing
 3 to 5 years in the period thereafter

For horizontally loaded foundations, the horizontal movements should also be monitored.

Method Statement for Monitoring of Concrete Foundations

Q A T A R Date : 06.07.2009

The monitoring marks etc. at the structure or foundation shall be installed by the contractor.
During his construction period, the contractor shall be responsible for carrying out the
monitoring.
Concrete foundations are to be marked to check the settlement and tilting.

6.3. SETTLEMENT BEHAVIOR

The settlement behavior of the foundation shall be verified and recorded. Both the total and
differential settlement as well as the increase of the settlements in time shall be calculated.
Where relevant, effects of vibrations on long-term settlement (tilting) shall be taken into
account.

6.4. MONITORING OF SETTLEMENT-MAJOR FOUNDATIONS

 Major Foundations for monitoring Lox tank, Lin tank, Cold box.
 Mark 500 mm / or anchor bolt top elevation as datum from the top of floor elevation at
four location of the foundation during concreting.

 Mark the elevation also.

 Measure the distance, settlement at stated interval in stated in monitoring details.

 The difference in 500 mm/ or anchor bolt is the contraction of concrete.

 The difference in elevation is the settlement of the foundation. If different elevations are
readed, the settlement is improper.

6.5. MONITORING OF TILTING

 Check the coordinates of middle and corner points in the structure in vertical plane
during concrete and recording.

 Verify as stated in the monitoring intervals the middle and the corner points. If found
any difference the same is the tilting. The same is to be recorded.
6.6. SLOPES
The stability of a slope should be monitored over a minimum period of six months after
completion of that slope. As a minimum a monthly visual inspection for cracks and
deformations shall be carried out. For major works monitoring should also comprise
measurements of pore pressure, settlements and horizontal displacements.

6.7. TANK FOUNDATION

The tank foundation also checked as concrete foundation. During water test, the tank
settlement shall be monitored by the Tank Contractor.

All personnel will have PPE required for their specific tasks in addition to the minimum PPE
(coveralls, safety goggles, safety shoes, high-visibility vests, gloves) at site at all times as required.
In the event of a release, fire or explosion, employees will secure their area and evacuate to the
nearest muster point. Once all employees are evacuated the supervisor will conduct a headcount to
verify all employees are out of harms way. The supervision will report this to Contractor. Emergency
Contact numbers for Company, Contractor and Gama will be posted onsite.
All vehicles and equipment used for the subject work will be inspected and certified as required.
Drivers and operators will be competent and will have attended all required trainings set forth in
project procedures and specifications.
