John Lennon is one of the biggest names of the 20th century. He became a legend because of
his art, the Beatles, his marriage to Yoko Ono and his premature death.

The artist made clear his love for bicycles, which was present from an early age in his life.
Lennon had a not very easy childhood. His father, who was a sailor, disappeared when he was
six years old. His mother then passed on the responsibility of raising him to Lennon's sister. In
an environment full of confrontations and confusion, Lennon found joy and freedom in cycling.

“When I was little, I dreamed of one thing above all else: having my own bicycle,” Lennon
declared in an interview years later. A childhood dream that came true in 1952, when he
successfully passed Eleven Plus, a children's exam that English children had to pass to enter
college. It was George, her sister Mimi's husband and a kind of adoptive father, who gave it to
her. “I was the happiest boy in Liverpool and even in the world,” said Lennon, “and I lived for
that bike. Most of the children left it parked in their gardens at night, but I made sure to bring
it home and even slept with it the first few nights.”

In March 1957, John Lennon, then sixteen, formed a skiffle group with several friends from
Quarry Bank High School in Liverpool. They briefly called themselves the Blackjacks, before
changing their name to The Quarrymen, after discovering that another local group was already
using the name. Fifteen-year-old Paul McCartney joined them as a rhythm guitarist shortly
after he and Lennon they met in July. In February 1958, McCartney met his friend George
Harrison to watch the band. The fifteen-year-old auditioned for Lennon, impressing him with
his performance, but Lennon initially thought Harrison was too young for the band. After a
month of persistence from Harrison, during a second meeting, he played the main part of the
instrumental song "Raunchy" on the upper deck of a Liverpool bus and was recruited as lead
guitarist. In January 1959, Lennon's friends left the group and began their studies at the
Liverpool School of Art and Design. The three guitarists, who called themselves "Johnny and
the Moondogs", played rock and roll whenever they found a drummer. Lennon's art school
friend Stuart Sutcliffe, who had just sold one of his paintings and been persuaded to buy a bass
guitar, joined in January 1960, and it was he who suggested changing the band's name to
"Beatals", as in a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets. They were named this until May,
when they joined the Silver Beetles, before briefly touring Scotland as the backing group for
pop singer and bandmates Johnny Gentle. In early July, they were revamped as the "Silver
Beatles", and in mid-August they shortened their name to The Beatles.
