CEPCO PHC Piles
Applications:
FOUNDATION PILES :

Buildings, piled embankments,

bridges, ports and marine structures
(able to produce up until 50m single
length without jointing).

RETAINING WALLS :

Retaining and quay walls.

COLUMNS :

Prefabricated construction of building

and marine structure

Special Features
and Merits:
CEPCO PHC Piles

Large Bearing Capacity - Centrifugal method of pile forming produces high strength dense concrete which
results in larger bearing capacity for the same given section.
Large Bending Moment Capacity - The effects of prestressing, geometry of section and high strength concrete
give rise to large bending moment capacity.
Highly Resistant to Sulphate Attack and Steel Reinforcement Corrosion - The effect of prestressing prevents
cracking in the piles. Even if cracking does occur due to a temporary excessive load, it will disappear as soon as
the load is removed. Therefore, protection of the prestressed bars from corrosion is assured. The high concrete
density also has high resistance to sulphate attack.
Strong Joint and Easy to Form - On completion of welding work, the welded joint becomes instantaneously
as strong as the pile body. Moreover, the joint welding work can be done by utilizing fully automatic welding
methods. This is also to ensure that a full strength weld is produced.
Easy Installation, Noiseless, Non-Vibrative Installation Methods Possible - Various kinds of installation
methods which have significant sound and vibration effects have been developed to adapt to different types of
environment.

CEPCO PHC Piles also offer the following additional features and merits due to higher strength: -
Higher Structural Strength - Spun concrete compressive strength of 80, 90 or 100 N/mm2 is achieved and hence
improve the overall structural strength of piles such as allowable axial load capacity, tensile capacity and bending
capacity.
More Economical - CEPCO PHC Piles can be driven to much harder bearing strata to achieve higher bearing
capacity. This results in overall saving in the foundation cost.
Improved Overall Quality - Overall quality of piles is further improved particularly resistance to corrosion and
sulphate attack due to further reduction in the permeability of the concrete.
Earlier Delivery Period - CEPCO PHC Piles are ready for driving earlier than the normal piles due to the higher
concrete compressive strength achieved.

10 CONCRETE ENGINEERING PRODUCTS BERHAD (Co. No. 88143-P)

Manufacturing
CEPCO prestressed spun concrete piles generally comply with the following specification:-

Standards
CEPCO PHC Piles are manufactured to generally comply with the requirements of:-

MS 1314:Part 4:2004 - Precast Pretensioned Spun Concrete Piles (Class A, B and C)

JIS A 5373 - Precast Prestressed Concrete Products
BS 8110:1997 - Structure Use of Concrete
BS 8004:2015 - Code of Practice for Foundations
BS EN 1992-1-1:2004+A1:2014 - Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures. General Rules and Rules
for Buildings
MS EN 1992-1-1:2010 - Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures - Part 1-1: General Rules
and Rules for Buildings
MS EN 1992-1-1:2010 (National Annex) - Malaysia National Annex to Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures
– Part 1-1: General Rules and Rules for Buildings.
SS EN 206:2014 - Concrete - Specification, Performance, Production and Conformity
ACI 543R - Design, Manufactured and Installation of Concrete Piles

Materials
Cement
Cement used is conforming to MS EN 197-1:2014 or equivalent.

Aggregates
Aggregate used is conforming to MS EN 12620:2010 or equivalent.

Additives
Additives used is conforming to MS EN 934-1:2012, BS EN 934-1:2008, JIS A 6204, ASTM C494 Type F or equivalent.

Prestressing Steel
Prestressing steel used is conforming to MS 1138:Part 3:2007, JIS G 3137 or equivalent.

Spiral Wire
Spiral wire used is conforming to MS 144:2014 or equivalent.

Concrete Strength
The minimum concrete cube strength at: -
a) Transfer of prestress 30 N/mm2
b) 28 days 80 N/mm2 / 90 N/mm2 / 100 N/mm2

The required strength can be achieved either by 28 days or earlier, by accelerated curing. With the high concrete
compressive strength of 80 N/mm2, 90 N/mm2 or 100 N/mm2 being achieved, the overall structural strength is also
enhanced in terms of the allowable axial bearing capacity, the tensile capacity and the bending capacity.

The durability of the Spun Piles is further improved by increase the resistance to sulphate attack and corrosion,
due to the denser concrete by centrifugal compaction, in which reduces the permeability of the concrete.

CORPORATE PROFILE 11
Pile Joint
All Spun Piles will be supplied with steel End-Plated for jointing / splicing. When two lengths of the Spun Pile are
joined by welding along their entire periphery, the bending strength of the completed joint has been so designed
to have at least the same structural characteristics as the pile body.

Lifting Points
Lifting points will be marked on all the Spun Piles of 12 meter and above. The lifting of the piles is generally carried
out by wire ropes at the specified lifting positions or by any approved hook mechanism at both ends.

Identification
All CEPCO Spun Piles shall carry the following markings: Manufacturer’s name, Malaysia Standard reference of
pile size and class, date of cast, serial number, pile length and type.

Processes
Steel moulds are fed with concrete up to the required volume, then properly locked. Prestressed the steel bars
then compacted to a designed centrifugal compaction by spinning. They are transferred to chambers, where
steam is being supplied for curing in order to achieve the necessary transfer strength. After curing is completed,
the Spun Piles are then demoulded for checking while the steel moulds are recycled.

CEPCO PC Poles
Applications and Features
Prestressed spun concrete poles are manufactured by the application of the technique of pretensioning and
centrifugal compaction. This product is circular and hollow in cross-section and is far superior in strength and cost
to poles of other structural materials.

The advantages of prestressed spun concrete poles are as follows:-

• Circular structure enables these poles to resist imposed load in all directions.
• Smooth and pleasing appearance.
• Semi-permanent and maintenance-free.
• Less susceptible to developing cracks than conventional concrete poles during handling and transportation.
• Mass production and economical in cost.
• Any attachments, such as step bolts, can be fitted easily and securely.

The reliability of prestressed spun concrete poles manufactured under stringent quality control system has gained
good reputation and they are widely used locally and overseas.

These poles are used for:-

• Telecommunication lines
• Electric power transmission and distribution lines
• Traffic signal equipment
• Street lighting
