Module Code : 4MA008

Module Title : Engineering Science
Date : Semester 1/ Year 2021/2
Examiners : M r. S. Punchihewa/ Mr.J.Perera
Time Allowed : 3 Hours

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

• This is a closed book examination.

• Answer Four questions only.

• You may use blue or back but not red pen.

• Formula sheet is attached

• You can use a scientific calculator. This must not be programmable and may be
inspected during the examination.
Module
Code:

1
A structural member is to be modelled as a beam which is supported
as shown in Fig 3a. It carries a uniformly distributed load on the right
hand side of 1.5 kN/m. Two point loads 20 kN and 12 kN are also
applied as shown.

Fig. Q1

(a) Determine the magnitude of the reaction forces at the two supports A
and D.
(5 Marks)

(b) Analyse the shear force along the length of the beam by using a
shear force diagram.
(8 Marks)

(c) Analyse the bending moment along the length of the beam and
represent it using a bending moment diagram.
(12 Marks)

2. A basketball player is standing on the floor 10.0 m away from the basket as
shown in Figure Q3. The height of the basket is 3.05 m, and he shoots the ball at
a 40.0° angle from a height of 2.00 m.

(a) Determine the speed of the ball that the player must throw so that the ball
goes directly through the hoop of basket.
(15 Marks)
(b) Determine the magnitude and direction of basketball’s velocity at the
instant when it enters the basket.
(10 Marks)

3. A drive shaft has a hollow cross section of 40mm outer diameter and 10 mm
inner diameter. The shaft is 0.5m long and has modulus of rigidity (G) 80 GPa.
The shear stress must not exceed 150 MPa at rotational speed of 2000 RPM.
Calculate the following:
a. The maximum torque that should be
(10 Marks)
transmitted. b. The angle of twist which will occur.
(10 Marks)
c. The transmitted power

Code:

4. a. A sinusoidal current of 5 A at 50 Hz flows through a series combination

of a resistor of 10 Ω and an inductor of 25 mH.

Determine:
(i) the voltage across the combination
(ii) the phase angle between this voltage and the current
(10 Marks)

b. Calculate the inductive voltage v o in the circuit of Figure Q4 if C = 200
