What’s In
People communicate to each other using words. In speaking, for
instance, in order for a conversation to flow smoothly, it is important to
observe correct order of words to express ideas. This hinders communication
problems from occurring. This is also applied in writing. When words are not
properly sequenced, the ideas might be misinterpreted or the message might
not be clear to readers. Learning how to use words properly to form phrases,
clauses, and sentences will help improve speaking and writing skills.
In this module, you will be learning about phrases, clauses, and
sentences and their types. These will be discussed thoroughly.
What’s New
Activity 1: Group Me

characteristics. Write the letters of your answers in the appropriate columns.
a. indigenous peoples
b. disciplined people
c. people have quarantine pass
d. because Baguio has a cold weather
e. which made tourists admire the City of Pines
f. numerous Igorots have helped each other this time of COVID-19
What’s In It
When people communicate, they use phrases, clauses, and
sentences. All these are composed of words, but they have their differences.
Kinds of Phrase
A noun phrase consists of a noun and other related words (usually
modifiers and determiners) which modify the noun. It functions like a noun
in the sentence.
Examples: It was a wonderful story.
I saw two young men talking to each other.
A verb phrase is a combination of main verb and its auxiliary or
helping verb in a sentence. Some examples of helping verbs are am, is, are,
was, were, be, has, have, had, do, does, did, may, might, must, can, could,
shall, should, will, and would.
Examples: We should go to Tiongsan Harrison and buy some school
supplies.
My friends were riding bikes at Burnham Park.
4
A prepositional phrase is a group of words made up of a preposition
and a noun or pronoun, called the object of the preposition. It functions
either as adjectives or as adverbs within sentences.
An adjective phrase is a prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or
pronoun by telling what kind or which one.
Examples: The building near our house is demolished.
The teacher erased the writings on the board.
Pinikpikan is a Cordilleran delicacy with chicken as its
main ingredient.
An adverb phrase is a prepositional phrase that modifies a verb,
adjective, or adverb by pointing out where, when, in what manner, or to
what extent.
Examples: Baguio City was devastated during the typhoon.
The students are ready before the activity.
The teacher arrived early for class.
Overall, there are three kinds of phrases. Now, the next part will be on
clauses.
Kinds of Clause
An independent or main clause can stand by itself as a complete
sentence. There can be more than one independent clause in a sentence
joined by coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
A dependent or subordinate clause, although it has a subject and a
verb, cannot stand by itself as a complete sentence. It can only be part of a
sentence. This clause can be easily identified because it starts with a
conjunction or a relative pronoun.
Examples:
independent/main clause dependent/subordinate clause
I took medicine yesterday because I had stomachache.
5
An exclamatory sentence conveys strong emotion and ends with an
exclamation mark.
Example: Ouch, my foot hurts!
