Construction:- T
he gib and cotter joint is made up of three main
components:
1.The strap:The strap is a forked end of one of the rods. The slot in the
s trap is slightly wider at the top than at the bottom.
2. The gib: The gib is a wedge-shaped piece of metal that is inserted
into the slot in the strap. The gib has a projection at the top that fits
into the fork of the strap and a projection at the bottom that rests on
the end of the other rod.
3. The cotter: The cotter is a wedge-shaped piece of metal that is driven
through holes in the strap and the gib. The cotter has a tapered end
that fits into the tapered slot in the strap and the gib.
orking:-When the cotter is driven through the holes in the strap and the
W
gib, it forces the gib up into the fork of the strap. This wedges the gib and
cotter together, which in turn clamps the two rods together. The cotter is
prevented from slipping out of the holes by the tapered end of the cotter
and the tapered slot in the strap and the gib.
Advantages:-
he gib and cotter joint has several advantages over other types of joints,
T
including:
1. It is a strong and reliable joint that can be used to connect rods that
are subjected to high loads.
2. It is a simple joint that is easy to assemble and disassemble.
3. It is a relatively inexpensive joint to manufacture.
isadvantages:-
D
The gib and cotter joint also has a few disadvantages, including:
1. It is not suitable for connecting rods that are frequently rotated.
2. It is not suitable for connecting rods that are subjected to shock
loads.
3. It is not a very precise joint.
