Week 6 | Part 6: Finalizing the Plan
I have considered various options for my nursing specialty, including a close look at my
selected (or currently preferred) specialty and second-preferred specialty. I have also
developed a justification of my selected (or preferred) specialty. Lastly, I have examined
one professional organization related to my selected or preferred specialty and
considered how I can become a member of this organization.
The results of my efforts are below.

the nursing specialty you have selected – or the one you prefer if your choice is still
under consideration - to your second preference. Identify each specialty and describe
the focus and the role that graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators
you feel are significant, especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.

choosing your MSN specialization. Be sure to incorporate any feedback you received
from colleagues in this week’s Discussion Forum.

organization.
Step 1: Comparison of Nursing Specialties

Use the space below to write 2-3 paragraphs comparing the nursing specialty you have
selected – or the one you prefer if your choice is still under consideration - to your
second preference. Identify each specialty and describe the focus and the role that
graduates are prepared for. Identify any other differentiators you feel are significant,
especially those that helped or may help you reach a decision.
Psychiatry and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is my final specialty of choice. The need for
mental health services is really high, yet the US continues to face a critical shortage of
professionals in the field. In the Psychiatry and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
specialization, you will learn to assess, diagnose, provide therapy, and prescribe medications
with psychiatric disorders, medical organic brain disorders, and substance abuse problems
(Walden University). The curriculum includes a strong pharmacology component. As a graduate
of Walden University Graduate of Science in Nursing program with Psychiatric Mental Health
Nurse Practitioner specialization, you will be prepared to meet the need in a variety of setting.
Every day on the news, there is a story about Mental health cases that has been neglected. The
mass shootings, increased Suicide rates, and increased bullying of innocent kids, are all
associated with an untreated Mental disorder. These reasons are why I decided to get into this
specialty.
Family Nurse Practitioner would have been my second choice. Family Nurse Practitioners
(FNP), are advanced registered Nurses with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage
health issues in patients of all ages, from birth through the senior year. The program focuses on
evidence based techniques that can enhance the quality of care and outcomes for your patients.
As a graduate of the program, you can pursue Family Nurse Practitioner certification and state
credentialing (Walden University).
Step 2: Justification of Nursing Specialty

choosing your MSN specialization. Be sure to incorporate any feedback you received
from colleagues in this week’s Discussion Forum.
Currently in America, staying or walking around crowded areas, puts me in a paranoid
state of mind. The increase rate in suicide, homicide, bullying, drug abuse and child
abuse, are all linked up to undiagnosed and untreated mental cases. I currently work on
the Rehab unit with the Veterans who have some form of mental illness, and serving all
of their needs gives me utmost satisfaction. Getting a specialty in PMHNP would enable
me serve the community, and decrease unnecessary violence.
Step 3: Professional Organizations

your selected or preferred specialty. Explain how you can become a member of this
organization.
Professional organization afford their members experiences to become knowledgeable
about issues pertinent to the organization or the profession (Milstead&Short, 2019).
The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) was founded in 1986. In the
ensuing years, APNA has grown to be the largest professional membership organization
committed to the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health (PMH) nursing and
wellness promotion, prevention of mental health problems, and the care and treatment
of persons with psychiatric disorders (apna.org).
Here are some good reasons to join a professional organization: Increases your
educational knowledge, personal and professional development, networking, and
certification (Olin,2012).
More than 12,500 members are connected with a dynamic community of
psychiatric mental health Nurses, exceptional resources and programs, and
opportunities to advance the PMH Nursing profession. All PMH nurses are eligible for
membership at a reasonable cost. The membership is comprised of approximately 40%
psychiatric registered nurses and 60% psychiatric advanced practice registered nurses
(APRNs). Members practice in all settings, including inpatient, community, academic,
research, private and public health institutions, and high level administrative positions at
state and federal levels (apna.org).
