Vocabulary Forces unit 7

Force is any action that can cause two types of effects when applied to an object.

Contact forces are interactions between objects that touch

Non-Contact forces are forces that act in the distance, like gravity, electrical or
magnetic forces.

Stretch: stretching happens when the material or object is pulled

Compress: Compression happens when the material or object is squashed

Elastic material: on applying load undergoes deformation on removal of load comes

back to its original size and shape. Deformation is temporary

Plastic material: on applying load undergoes deformation on removal of load does not
come back to its original size and shape. Deformation is permanent

Rigid material: on applying load does not deform.

Breaking point: The Force that causes an elastic object to break

Elastic limit: The most stretch that an elastic object can withstand before
permanently deforming

Thrust: the motive force in planes, rockets ….

Up thrust or lift is the force that pushes an object up. and makes it seem to lose
weight in a water or air.

Drag is the force made by the air resistance

Normal force: the force exerted on an object by the surface it is resting on.

Weight is the effect of the gravity over the mass. It depends on the planet where you
are.

Gravity is the force of attraction which pulls objects with mass towards a celestial
body.

Dynamometer a device which measures the magnitude of forces.

Pressure is the relationship between the force applied and the surface area it is
applied to.

Lever can be described as a long rigid body with a fulcrum (Point at which the lever
pivots) along its length.
