Chemical Agent Water Treatment

Description Sodium carbonate (soda ash), chemical formula Na2CO3, CAS Number
497‐19‐8 (anhydrous), is a chemical agent, in solid (powder form) or
ready to use water solution form, diluted in various concentration.

Point of Use Sodium carbonate is widely used in industry, like glass, paper, soaps
and detergents, as well as in post‐treatment or water desalination
plants, as alkalinity regulator. Sodium carbonate is a food additive
(E500), typically used as acidity regulator or anticaking and stabilizing
agent.

Package Solid sodium carbonate (powder) is available in standard 25 kg

polyethylene bags or big bags of 1,000 kg.
Liquid forms are available in standard, non‐returnable, polyethylene
canisters, of 25 kg, IBC containers or road tankers.

Handling and Storage Sodium carbonate is alkaline and should be handled with all
appropriate pre‐cautions, as mentioned in Material Safety Data Sheet.
However sodium bicarbonate is not considered dangerous.
