The hospital is a public hospital and county referral Hospital. On average the hospital has a bed
capacity of 105 beds and a nurse to patient ratio of 1:6

Beds in the unit (medical surgical unit): 50 male and 55 female beds

Medical surgical Unit

Responsibilities

  Medication administration and intravenous fluids infusions.


  Blood transfusions
 Admission and discharge of patients, including patient teaching.

 Assisting with simple bedside laboratory investigations such as blood sugar checks,
 obtaining blood, urine and sputum samples.
  General patient care like turning of patients, bed baths
  Consultation with attending physician regarding patient status.
  NGT insertion and feeding via NGT
 Urinary catheter insertion
 Assisting Health Care Providers when performing special bedside procedures like
lumbar puncture.

 Reporting laboratory results and other investigations to the Health Care Provider as may
be found necessary.

 Prepare a clean and warm environment to receive the newborn and ensuring all
equipment required for emergency are set up

 Ensuring that mothers are educated on what to expect during labor and post-delivery,
how to take care of the new born and the importance of breastfeeding.
