Literature Study Questions Chapter 2

What is the "Tribulation"? Why did it happen? The Tribulation is a nuclear holocaust believed
to have been brought down upon the Old People by God. They believe He did it to punish
them for their sins.

Why must David keep Sophie's six toes a secret from everyone? He must keep it a secret
because that means Sophie is a deviation and if caught she would be sent to the Fringes or
killed.

Why are some people considered Blasphemies? They are considered Blasphemies because
they do not follow "the image of God". Blasphemies are either ousted or killed since they are
abnormal.

Why do you think the novel begins by telling about David's dream? What significance do you
believe it may have? It may have told about what the Old People lived like before the
Tribulation to compare to the state of Waknuk and other places after the nuclear holocaust.

What are the religious slogans on the walls of David's home deal with? The religious slogans
deals with Offenses and Blasphemies. These slogans are what David learned and must
follow.

What do you think is the cause behind the deviations and offenses? Why do you think the
author does not give us an answer? The cause behind deviations and offenses may have
been genetic mutation. On the back of the book, it states that the story takes place after a
nuclear global war. Nuclear wars give off radiation, and that caused genetic changes in
people and caused them to become abnormal, such as growing extra body parts or having
unusual length in certain places of their body, and this likely affected their descendants, who
become "deviations" because of their genetics contracted from their parents. They will also
have certain abnormal features like extra body parts or unusual length in certain places of
their body. This also shows that there is no cure for their DNA to become normal again and
will likely affect their descendants.

Watch the episode 10 of The Oblongs " Get Off My Back". What similarities do you see
between the show and the novel? The similarities between the show and the novel is that
both protagonists live in areas where radiation is present causing DNA changes. People who
are abnormal are discriminated against by society based on the beliefs they set. However, in
The Chrysalids, something is actually done to rid the towns of deviations, by either
outcasting or killing them.
