The Art of Teaching: Student Teachers in Action

by: Naomi Marcelino

Teachers Day honors and celebrates the hardworking and devoted individuals who develop the
brains of the next generation. However, it is equally critical to recognize student teachers'
contributions in the classroom. They are the ones who represent teachers and provide excellent
instruction to students, particularly those at the lower levels.

The teachers felt overwhelmed by this because the students are prepared to take the reins as a
teacher, and this can also put good benefits on students since they can gain valuable hands-on
experience in instructional planning, classroom management, and assessing student learning.

I questioned one of the student teachers from RMA who got up to speak. Brianna Manlusoc, a
student in grade 10, described her fantastic experience. “For one day, I taught 9-Joshua the
Romeo and Juliet lesson for their English class as a student teacher. I would rate my
experience as great; it was wonderful to learn about the daily struggles that teachers face
and to understand what it's like to be in their shoes. We, student teachers, are left with the
acknowledgment that teachers put a lot of effort into teaching us, and we should be
appreciative of that.” She made the decision to become a student teacher because she
seemed to admire educators who put in a lot of effort on behalf of students. Her statement
suggests that she had a tremendously positive experience and really loved her time as a
student teacher. Teachers must be delighted with her.

An honorable mention goes out to all the student instructors who took part in the teacher's
day celebration. Our dedicated and compassionate teachers felt loved as a result. Given
that they gained teaching experience and got to share their knowledge, I have no doubt that
this also made the student teachers feel loved.
