kind of world is this? Get the children to
focus on the setting of the fantasy world

inspire them.
UFO - As well as creating their own space
fantasy story, children can use the Alien Invasion

them. Play them a clip from Orson Welles’ 1938
adaptation of The War of the Worlds by H.G.
Wells which was broadcast in the form of news
bulletins reporting a Martian invasion. The Editable

Fractal - This picture can be used to inspire
all kinds of fantasy-related writing. What is the
strange pattern and what does it mean? Use in
conjunction with work in maths but also get the
children to think whether this could be a portal of
some kind, enabling time travel. Share A Wrinkle
In Time by Madeleine L’Engle with the children
to inspire them. What would they find if they
could travel back and forth in time? Would some
historical events happen for reasons different
to what we think now? The Interactive Fantasy
Story Mountain resource will help the children plan
their stories.

Bed - Share Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by
Lewis Carroll with the children and take them on a
fantastic trip of interesting and unusual characters
in a strange fantasy world. As well as inspiring
them to write their own fantasy stories, use the
Paragraph Cohesion activity to go over grammar
on the use of paragraphs in writing. The Alice’s
Quest - There is something magical about this
picture and the setting can inspire a lot of fantasy
story writing. Using the Fantasy Short Story
Writing Resource Pack, get the children to explain
why the person is there, what they are looking at
and the significance of the stars. There could be
good or dark magic afoot.

Children’s graphic and presentation skills are developed by introducing drawing as opposed

draw, order, group and manipulate objects to make a picture. They will also learn to evaluate

to advertise their fantasy stories or portraits of their fantasy story characters.

All great fantasy worlds need maps and this is a great way to get the children to create maps
of theirs. Include geographical skills including compass points, symbols and scale and use in
Geography conjunction with work in maths and computing. Go one step further and make the maps 3D! The

capable of so many things. Our imaginations are just a small part of what the brain can do. The

to think of how their brains need to be occupied with an activity, such as colouring, in order to
be creative.

Design & develop their understanding of mechanical
Technology systems and learn about controlling
movement with a cam mechanism as
part of an automaton animal using the
PlanIt Automata Animals Unit. They develop
their designing skills through using information
sources to research ideas about animals which
are then incorporated into the design criteria
and designs. Children then make a simple cam
mechanism to formulate an understanding of how
different shaped cams can be used to produce
different movements.
They extend their making skills by developing
techniques in cutting, shaping and joining to
combine components and by selecting tools and
equipment to measure and cut wood and card
accurately. Through these activities they gain
an understanding of the working characteristics
of the materials and components and how they
can be combined to create more useful properties.
Peer assessment is used to improve designs and
evaluate final products. The plans for the animals
can be adapted into creatures and characters from
their fantasy stories.
