Learning Activity 2. Decision-Making Process

In such a changing, dynamic and complex environment, we have a constant need

of a quick decision-making. This action can be very disconcerting, due to the
impossibility of assimilating all the necessary information to make the most
appropriate decision. Decision-making involves a creative and systematic mental
process. That is why this activity will show you the necessary steps to make an
effective decision. Practicing this process will avoid that someone else does it for
you.

After this activity, you will understand better the process and planning of decision-
making.

To start with, check and analyze the following resources:

• Decision-Making Process

• Decision Making Process easypresentations1. (2012, September 16).

After reviewing the previous materials, identify the steps of the decision-making
process, and create a flow chart including the strategy, structure and availability of
the resources. Present the information in a chronological, clear and a coherent
manner.

Then pose a problem and its possible solution options in a comparative table like
the one shown on the video.

Properly cite and reference the sources in an APA format, mention at least three
sources presented in that format. Use the correct spelling and grammar rules and
include a cover with your data.

Introduction.

The decision-making process is a fundamental aspect of human cognition that

influences virtually every facet of our lives, from the mundane choices we make in
our daily routines to the pivotal decisions that shape our futures. It is a dynamic
and multifaceted cognitive mechanism that involves selecting one course of action
from multiple alternatives based on a set of criteria, values, and preferences.

This process is a fundamental part of both personal and professional life, as it is

the means by which individuals, groups, and organizations navigate the
complexities of an ever-changing world. In this exploration of the decision-making
process, we will delve into the various components, models, and factors that
influence how decisions are made, shedding light on the intricate interplay of
psychology, cognition, and external influences that shape our choices.

Whether it be a simple preference for breakfast cereal or a complex business

strategy, understanding the decision-making process is key to enhancing the
quality of our choices and achieving our goals.

EXAMPLE
Sara is trying to decide which car to buy. Here are the steps in the decision-making
process:

Step 1: Define the objective

• Objective: Select a car that suits her needs and budget.

Step 2: Establish criteria

• Sara set the following criteria:

Fuel efficiency.

Car safety.

Interior space and comfort.

Total cost of ownership, including purchase price and maintenance expenses.

Step 3: Choose options

• Sara identified several acceptable car options that could meet her needs, such as
a compact sedan, a compact SUV, and a hybrid.

Step 4: Identify pros and cons

• Sara evaluated how each car option aligns with her criteria using a decision-
making table, which includes information on fuel efficiency, safety features, interior
space, and costs.

Step 5: Decide on the most logical option

• Based on the evaluation of pros and cons, Sara ranked the car options and
decided which one is the most logical according to her needs and criteria.

Step 6: Evaluate the results

• After purchasing the car, Sara considered what she liked and didn't like about her
choice, such as the actual fuel efficiency compared to expectations and interior
comfort.

In this example, Sara applied a structured decision-making process to choose a

car that fits her needs. She used specific criteria, evaluated options, and reflected
on her choice after the purchase. This process can be useful in making important
decisions like buying a car.
