Prepositions of Place
We use ​prepositions​ of place to talk about a place where someone or something is. ​
After am/is/are​, we use preposition + noun.

Where?

Subject am/is/are preposition noun

Fish are in the lake.

Our tent is next to the lake.

The black cat is under the red car.

I am by the river.

A campfire is in front of our tent.

Many tall trees are above our tent.

A waterfall is between those two mountains.

A small shop is behind our campsite.

Three boats are on the lake.

Rules for Prepositions of Place: ​in, on, at

The ​prepositions ​(​in, out, at​ )​ are used with certain places and are followed by a noun.

Where?

Rules Subject am/is/are preposition noun

The Eiffel Tower is in Paris.

I am in Guangdong Province.

in​ + a​ city, Torres del Paine is in Chile.


province, state, National Park
country, ​or
continent Yellowstone is in Montana, Idaho, ​and
National Park Wyoming.

The Rocky are in North America.


Mountains

The Walk of Fame is on Hollywood Boulevard.


on​ + a​ street​ or
building floor
Ushi and Meili are on the ninth floor.

The British Prime is at 10 Downing Street,


at​ + an ​address ​or Minister’s office London, SW1A 2AA.
