Define community nutrition

Community nutrition provides fundamental knowledge to individuals and families


regarding nutrition facts, eating habits, food security and resources. It is a field
dedicated to providing information and resources to the community to promote healthy
lifestyles.

2. List the importance of community nutrition.

Education and food availability are of utmost importance to the community as they
directly relate to health outcomes. Community nutrition aims to provide nourishments
that increases overall health and prevents chronic diseases for all individuals. Places
such as low-income areas, nutritionists can work to ensure access to healthy food
options. Ensuring food security and promoting healthy eating habits may combat
prevalent health issues such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

3. Define the term ‘Vulnerable groups’.

Vulnerable groups are physically, mentally or socially disadvantaged persons who may
be unable to meet their basic needs and may therefore require specific assistance.

7. Define malnutrition, under-nutrition and over-nutrition

Malnutrition refers to deficiency excesses or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy


and/or nutrients.

Under-nutrition is a deficiency of calories or of one or more essential nutrients.

Over-nutrition is an imbalance of nutrition arising from excessive intake of nutrients,


leading to accumulation of body fat that impairs health.

8. List at least Six (6) Organisations involved in community nutrition and explain their
involvement.
(a) Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI)
This institute aims to attain food security and achieve optimal nutritional health and
for all people of the Caribbean through collaboration with Caribbean countries to
enhance, describe, manage and prevent the key nutritional problems and to
increase their capacity in providing effective nutritional services.

(b) World Health Organisation (WHO)


The WHO is providing scientific advice and decision – making tools that can help
countries take action to address all forms of malnutrition to support health and well
being for all, at all ages.

(c) The United Nations Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN)


The UNSCN advocates human rights based approach to eliminate all forms of
malnutrition and promote inter- sectoral analysis and action.

(d) Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC)


CAREC is a public health information, service and consulting organization dedicated
to bring the best at providing information that people need to improve health and
prevent disease in the Caribbean.

(e) The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)


The FAO provides scientific advice on human nutrient consumption requirement and
on food composition. This work contributes to developing harmonized international
food standard guidelines and codes of practice that protect consumer’s health.

(f) Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI)


This institute purpose is to ensure that the Caribbean citizenry, both present and
future are able to experience a long and healthy life.
