Quarter 2 – Module 1
Procure and Select Good
Quality Seeds
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
In hope of slowing down the spread of CoViD-19, the DepEd had decided to
have an alternative learning modality aside from the face-to-face approach to education
since it is already losing its relevance in this time of crisis. Thus, this module was designed
and written for learning at home. It is here to help you master the nature of Horticulture. The
scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations and we
encourage you not to stop learning but must adapt to the new types of learning modality.

This is the first module of the second quarter in TLE AFA: Horticulture 10.
This is specifically crafted to hone your skills to be a successful horticulturist. It focuses on
the competency which is to procure and select good quality seeds. An effective
horticulturist is equipped with the practical knowledge and skills in the field of agriculture.
Learning the competencies of this lesson will prepare you for future employment, higher
education, and business. Furthermore, you can also apply the knowledge and skills acquired
from this module to improve your personal well-being. It is a life skill that is timely and
relevant in this time of pandemic.

Growing seedlings is not an easy task. First you need to have knowledge on
the basic about the seeds that you are going to use for planting. In this lesson we will learn
about seeds: their quality and characteristics and we will appreciate the value of securing a
good quality seeds for growing seedlings. At the end of the module, you are expected to:

recognize the characteristics of good quality seeds;

analyze the advantages and disadvantages of securing seeds; and
develop a sense of responsibility in procuring and selecting good quality seeds.

E P E T R E

The previous quarter brought and taught you that proper site selection plays a
significant role in vegetable production. One must take consideration of the factors or
requirements of a good site. Learning these are indispensable to achieve the standard set by
the industry of horticulture. As a young learner who dreams of acquiring such skills, you will
have to practice what you have learned to achieve your vision to become a successful
horticulturist. Your prior knowledge on proper site selection as well as the use of appropriate
farm tools, implements, and simple equipment in preparing the land will make your work
easier, faster, and better in the agricultural field.
This topic is part of the course in HORTICULTURE leading to NC II
Qualification consisting of the core competencies that a person must achieve in producing
major lowland and semi temperate vegetables.
Finally, you are now in the second quarter and this module shall develop the
knowledge, skills, and attitudes in procuring and selecting quality vegetable seeds to plant.

WHAT’S NEW

Directions: Read the paragraph and study the picture below. Give your opinion on
the following question. Write your suggestions on your answer sheet.
Ireneo V. Diamante National High School is participating in the gardening
program of the local government. As part of their involvement, they have prepared
the land and their school nursery. The bare area and the empty seed boxes need to
be planted with vegetables that would help their learners become strong and healthy.
What are the things that they should do next?

If you were one of the members of the NGP Team, what are the things that you
should do next to reach the school’s vision?

Procuring and Selecting Good Quality Seeds

 Select Quality Seeds

A seed is a fertilized and ripened ovule which may develop into a plant by
germination. Its primary function is for reproduction. Seed’s quality plays an important role in
the production of horticultural crops. The selection of the best planting material is basic to
good crop production. Because of this, the vegetable grower must be knowledgeable about
seeds specially for planting purposes. He must be familiar with the characteristics of good
quality seeds. Here are some factors to consider in selecting quality seeds:

 Viability (It is the capability of seeds to germinate.)

 Seed maturity (Seeds from a matured fruit that have a fully developed embryo.)
 Clean (There should be no impurities or mixtures of any kind.)
 Free from insect or mechanical damage
 True–to-type (It carries the characteristics of the mother plant or pure for the crop
variety.)
 Contain little or no inert matter or weed seeds.
 Free from seed borne diseases
 Seed storage

 Procurement of Seeds
Usually, local vegetable growers plant vegetable seeds that come their way
without realizing where they come from. This is also true of schools and parents at home
who have interests in planting.
According to Calacala (1977), there are two ways of securing the seeds to be
planted:
1. Seeds can be bought from seed stores in the locality or ordered from reliable seed
producers.
Most seeds you can buy from the stores are hybrid seeds. They are a product
of crosses of two different varieties. It produces plants with vigor, disease resistance and
productivity. Hybrid seeds are more expensive.

2. Seeds can also be produced by farmers themselves for open pollinated crops.
In securing seeds to plant one must consider the quality of the product and
make sure that the seeds are adapted to the locality. It would be a waste of time if one would
plant seeds that are of low quality, not viable, or not adapted to the place. You can save
vegetable seeds from your own garden produce to plant for the next cropping. In seed
savings, it involves selecting good variety of plants from which to save seeds and harvesting
seeds at the right time.

Factors to consider when securing seeds:

1. Quality of the seeds
2. Adaptation of the seeds to the locality

 A supply of seeds is always made available.

3
 A higher percentage of germination is assured.
 Knowledge of the performance of the plant is present.
 An improvement of quality and quantity of the produce is possible

However, there are also disadvantages of producing your own seeds.

Ordinary farmers may not possess the qualities needed to produce good seeds. Some of the
disadvantages are:
1. It calls for the knowledge of the principle of plant breeding.
2. You won’t get the same quality of plant when you grow it
3.Seed growing in an exacting work
4. It calls for keen observation
5. Requires application of detail

WHAT’S MORE

A. Directions: Draw a  if the statement talks about the characteristics of a good quality
seed. and  if it is not on the space provided. Write the answer on your sheet of paper.
_____ 1. Good quality seeds are those that are viable and free from diseases.
_____ 2. Good quality seeds carry the characteristics of the mother plant or pure for the crop
variety.
_____ 3. Good quality seeds are immature or undeveloped.
_____ 4. Good quality seeds contain foreign objects.
_____ 5. Good quality seeds are stored properly in seed banks to prolong its life.

B. Directions: Read and analyze the situation. Answer the question briefly on your
answer sheet.
Situation:
Maria and Juan are junior high school students. They have a project in
vegetable production. They bought a pack of eggplant seeds from a side walk
vendor. When he sowed the eggplant seeds in the seed box, they were surprised
that only few eggplant seeds germinated.
Questions.
1. Why do you think are the reasons why only few seeds germinated?
2. If you are Maria and Juan, are you going to buy seeds from anyone? Why?

Directions: Write your insights by completing the fish bone diagram. Draw the diagram on
your answer sheet and fill it according to the following inputs.

2. Lower Fins – Advantages of Producing Own Seeds
3. Tail – Sources of Seeds
4. Head – Possible Effect of Planting Good Quality Seeds

WHAT I CAN DO
Activity 1: Juana Needs Advice
DIRECTIONS: Follow the instructions carefully and copy the template below on your answer
sheet for your findings and observations.

a. Visit a farmer in your barangay. Ask for some stored seeds (at least 50 seeds). Segregate
seeds based on quality. Out of 50 seeds, how many seeds do you considered as in good
quality? Not good quality?

Note: If you can’t find someone who has seeds, you can try buying in agricultural stores.

b. Sow the good quality seeds and not good quality seeds in separate seed boxes. Observe
how many seeds in each seed box have grown.
