Online Extra: Table of Projected Job Openings, 2004-2014
Health care is hot, but it's not the only game in town if you are looking to choose a career. Here is a
Also Included list of selected professions that someone with a postsecondary education might consider, ranked by
• Useful Web Sites the number of projected job openings from 2004 to 2014. These statistics are drawn from labor-
market projections by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in November, 2005. (For more, see
• Media Resources www.bls.gov/emp/home.htm.)
• Blue Steps Nurses are at the top of the list, with 1.2 million projected openings in the decade, both from growth
in the profession and the need to replace nurses who are retiring or moving into other lines of work.
• Network of Experts The number of projected openings for doctors is about equal to the number for lawyers and social
scientists, good news for those of you who always wanted to go to med school.

But what is especially striking about this list is the sheer number of teachers who will be needed in
the coming years, at every level. Health care may be the wave of the future, but education isn't far
behind.

Getting in the Game

isn't even that good. But you can have a career in sports.
By STEFAN FATSIS and PETER KEATING
At National Football League headquarters in New York these days, it's hard to find a senior executive
with much experience in, well, football.

Whether it's setting the stage for a meaningful entry, getting off on the right foot during the
"honeymoon period," or adjusting to what they learn about their employer down the road, new
executive recruits share the responsibility for integrating into the organization. That's according to Dr.
Rebecca Schalm, a senior consultant with RHR International in Toronto, who shared her perspectives
with ExecuNet's RecruitSmart Today during a recent web event.
Schalm says there are four formal stages of executive integration - the honeymoon (first three
months after hire), the reality (four to six months), the adjustment phase (seven to 12 months) and
integration (13-18 months). But the moves a new executive hire makes in the preparation process
(usually during the four weeks before they actually start in the new executive role) constitute a fifth
and equally important key to integration success.
"The stakes are high and there aren't second chances," Schalm says, citing role clarification,
identifying key relationships and identifying early wins as key objectives during the honeymoon
phase of an executive's tenure with a new employer.
The executive will gather a lot of important cues and intelligence about how the business operates
during their first six months, and the key to adjusting to that reality lies in learning the nuances of the
organization, and that's often when critical insights begin to emerge. That lets the executive pair their
experience with what they've learned to begin to really demonstrate their abilities during the
integration phase of their development.
"The integration process is usually completed within the first 12 to 18 months," Schalm says.
