Luka Logan is an 9th grade schoolgirl from San Antonio, Texas. Recently, she participated
in a spelling competition for the forth time and, after several rounds, two spellers
remained for the final, which Luka won. She was declared the winner of the National
Spelling Bee Championship and achieved the first-place price of $50,000.

“So surreal, honestly,” she said after winning the title, calling it “a dream come true.”

During the competition, Luka spelled 22 words correct in the 90-second speed round,
were her fellow finalist, Robert Smith, reached 15 words. “It certainly has’nt been a walk in the
park,” explained coach Walter Race. “Luka has previously participated in the spelling competition
but has, until know, failed to make it past the best 30.”

Luka has other hobbys apart from spelling. So, what is she going to do next? Musicals tops the list
of things she would like to do, but she also plays the piano and is giving the ukulele a try. As a keen
reader, it was actually her enthusiasm for reading that got her to join the spelling competition at the
first place. She likes creative writing as well, and is planing on publishing a book before finishing
high school.

experience. You have met teenagers from English-speaking countries who have told you their stories. At the
end of the week, you are supposed to write an article to be published in the online youth section.

‘Eco-Mermaid’ Swims Marathon to Fight Plastic Pollution


After a training session, swimmer Olivia Burly got badly injured from swallowing
some plastic that was floating in the sea. Fortunately, she has now fully recovered.
Since then, Olivia has successfully raised awareness of plastic pollution by breaking
her own world swim record for the distance of a full marathon in the rough waters
of Biscayne Bay, Florida.

Write an article (350-450 words) for the Global Weekly online youth section.
