Crowbar Crowbar

Technology Precautions
- Solid state crowbar, using Light Triggered Thyristors (LTTs) - If no freewheeling path is provided for the crowbar current,
connected in series a HV diode in parallel is required
- Air core reactor connected in series for dI/dt limitation - Protection class 1 laser is used to feed the Thyristor firing
fibre optics
Main features
- Rated voltage: 130 kV Main advantages
- Minimum operating voltage: 10 kV - Absence of toxic or dangerous products
- Protection self firing voltage: 170 kV - Very low voltage drop in conduction state
- Maximum peak current: 12 kA - Thyristor firing through fibre optics: No driver at high
- Maximum i2t: 700000 A2s potential is required
- Maximum dI/dt: 300 A/μs. Limited by an air core reactor - Robust solution
- Maximum dV/dt: 50 kV/μs - Absence of spurious triggerings of the crowbar
- Maximum operation delay: 5 μs (from the input external Trigger - Low Maintenance
signal to the contrasted firing of the Thyristors) - High modularity
- Maximum voltage drop at 2 kA: 110 V
- Maximum dissipated energy: Depending on discharge circuit Achievable customisations
and current shapes. To be consulted to JEMA engineers. - Immediate implementation of lower voltage crowbars with
- Insulation voltage, active parts to ground: less thyristor modules in series.
• 260 kV DC 1 minute - Easy increase of the rated voltage, due to the facilities for
• 180 kV AC 1 minute series connection of further thyristor modules.
• 450 kV 1.2/50 μs - Increase of the peak current and I2t, by choosing higher
- Cooling: Natural air cooling rated LTTs- Increase of the dissipated energy, by adapting
the heatsinks.
Protections
- Breakover Diode (BOD) integrated overvoltage protection, on Most important reference
every thyristor. This eliminates the risk of destruction of any - 12 units of 130 kV delivered for the protection of Neutral
LTT by overvoltage at the output or poor firing of any device. Beam Injectors (NBIs) at the Nuclear Fusion Tokamak
- Self Firing at 170 kV. EFDA-JET in Culham, UK.
- Monitoring of the current through the crowbar.
- Online check of the laser diodes which trigger the gate of the All the above characteristics could be modified under demand
thyristors.

Interface
- The status of the crowbar is monitored from voltage free
contacts or directly from a Siemens S7 PLC (via Profibus DP
link).
- Fibre optics ‘Trigger’ input for externally triggering the crowbar.
- Fibre optics outputs: ‘Crowbar Fired’ and ‘Crowbar ready’.
- Control integrated on a 19” 9u standard rack, at ground
potential.
- Optionally, Vcrowbar and Icrowbar signals in -10V/+10V range,
insulated and with 1 MHz bandwidth.
