This technical bulletin is to inform the technical community of the technical details of the newly
launched Xtreme printhead range.

Information

Detailed Description

The Xtreme series printheads are replacement printheads designed specifically for use with
SmartDate X65 but are backwards compatible with SmartDate X60. Extensive testing has
demonstrated improved performance over existing printhead options.

• For SmartDate X65/X65s, the Xtreme printheads are available for new machine and
spares orders

• For SmartDate X60/X60s, the Xtreme printheads are available for spares orders only

In all cases, the Xtreme printhead is available only as part of a ribbon supply contract. See
PMB21015 for further details.

Xtreme Printhead

Designed for the majority of SmartDate X65 applications, specifically those using 3520 Xtra
ribbons.

• Demonstrated excellent all-round performance in a wide range of applications

• Can be fitted to existing SmartDate X60/X65 with firmware upgrade

• Has a 100km/6-month warranty where applicable

Xtreme Plus

X-Series Printhead Xtreme-Plus ENM10108053

Designed for SmartDate X65 applications using resin ribbons, specifically those using 3910 Xpert
ribbon.

• Demonstrated excellent performance in difficult applications especially those printing

between 300 - 600mm/s

• Can be fitted to existing SmartDate X60/X65 with firmware upgrade

• Available individually and for spare printer orders

• Has a 40km/6-month warranty where applicable

With the introduction of the new Xtreme printhead range, the existing printheads have been
rebranded as ‘Xcel’.

Printhead Identification

The part number for the printhead is printed on a label attached to the printhead heatsink.

The printhead type information is also contained in the printhead log file. Opening the file with
an XML file reader will typically display the information below.

The table below indicates the printhead type.

In addition to the information previously available in the printhead log, Xtreme printheads
contain further diagnostic information about the printhead’s use.

Fitting instructions
Xtreme printheads are the same physical dimensions as the current Xcel range; fitting
instructions are supplied with each printhead. Compatible firmware is available from Sharepoint,
currently v33.1.24.

It is good practice to record controller settings before upgrading the firmware and fitting the
new printhead in case they become corrupted during the firmware upgrade or replacement
printhead operation.

Optimization
Follow the same process as used for Xcel printheads to set up the printhead however, the
following should be noted.
• Printhead Darkness – A set value for darkness used with an Xcel printhead is not
comparable with the darkness setting of the Xtreme printhead. Start at 100% and slowly
increase the darkness setting until acceptable print quality is achieved
• Cont. Levels – These settings do not apply to the Xtreme printheads, the only setting
available to adjust is the ‘Darkness’ setting value
• Hi-Speed – This setting is not available when using an Xtreme printhead type. The
printhead remains in full resolution up to 1200mm/s so no Hi-Speed setting is required
• Printhead Carriage Position – Depending on print speed, the printhead carriage
position may need slight adjustment for optimum print quality

Like other warning messages, they can be suppressed if not required.

Data Collection
To monitor the performance of the Xtreme printheads over an extended period, TTO Galaxy
Champions and other Technical Engineers have been asked to periodically collect printhead log
files from installations where the printheads are installed. For reference, the following email
mailbox has been created to facilitate the collection of these log files.
