IMPLEMENTATION OF NEP 2020 IN GNDU(&PUNABI UNIV)
(WITH STANDARDISED UNIFORM COUSES, FRAMEWORK & AWARDED DEGREES)
Background :
The Universities in Punjab has historical flagship UG degrees programs B.Sc, B.A.
(Multidisciplinary 3 core Discipline) run in hundred of affiliated colleges presently 3 years post
10+2 s and the Hon’s degrees(Single Core Discipline) in Science, Social Sciences streams of 4
years in campuses. In addition the university has flagship UG degree in commerce B.Com. run both
as pass course and Hon’s in affiliated colleges of 3 years and Hon’s or FYIP programs M.Com. in
campuses.
In recent years at UG level degrees BVOC(giving options study vocational subjects), B.C.A.,
B.B..A(from discipline having PG degrees M.B.A., M.C.A.) were introduced. Other UG degrees
with nomenclature in professional fields like BPES, BPED, BPT, B. Pharmacy, B.Tech.etc and
most existed in campuses. UG degrees in interdisciplinary fields like Biotechnology,
Bioinformatics, Biochemistry existed with recent starting new interdisciplinary degrees in FYIP in
Social Sciences, languages and Sciences in university campuses.
Over a period of time with spread of degrees and disciplines there has problems with nomenclature
degrees, disparity credit loads, no standardisation on Discipline Specific Core Course & Discipline
Specific Electives, between campus run & college affiliated. Further there was lack adequate option
Generic Electives to carry interdisciplinary studies and courses for hands on experience esp for non
science streams. There was no pathways to take UG Hon’s 4 year degrees from 3 year
multidisciplinary degrees pursed in colleges by doing additional one year and no option for award
of major minor in disciplines.
All the above issues lead to depletion of strength in affiliated colleges and even university
campuses. Other are issues faced by students in admission universities abroad esp in US/Canada
running 4 year UG programs. This has even led to large no of students moving abroad post10+2 for
university education. Further with opening of large no of private universities to PTU running
parallel courses in engineering colleges has compounded the situation and threatening existence of
affiliated colleges and with lack of funding the state public universities campuses themselves.
It is time for Public State Universities to use this historic opportunity created with need implement
NEP 2020 to streamline its degree program with standardisation of Discipline Specific Courses,
pathways for award of degrees in 3/4 years and more exit options. The university need to create
standard frameworks for its single core, multidisciplinary(existing 3 core & create new 2 core)
discipline and B.Com. flagship Programs The universities to create more Generic Electives(GE’s)
course options for the future in interdisciplinary studies.
The present study has been done on various degree programs run by GNDU at UG and PG levels
and the syllabuses made for curriculums offered in affiliated colleges, campus for last decade. There
has been attempt transition to NEP 2020 in campus run curriculums but still lack standardisations in
framework, terminology and lack of options for opting and awarding minors etc. There is complete
disconnect at UG programs run at college level and already over loaded curriculums finding
difficult to fit in NEP 2020 guidelines and framework. The solutions proposed are equally
applicable to Punjabi University facing similar challenges.
The standardised framework arrived for various degree is as under ;
GUIDELINES FRAMEWORK OF DEGREES AS PER NEP 2020 for GNDU - Annx ‘A’
STRUCTURE OF UG SINGLE CORE DISCIPLINE PROGRAM - Annx ’B’
STRUCTURE OF UG MULTIDISCIPLINARY (THREE CORE DISCIPLINE ) PROGRAM - Annx ‘C’
(FOR AFFILIATED COLLEGES UG PROGRAMS BY FACULTY 12+3 AND OTHERS)
STRUCTURE OF B.COM.(PROGRAM) - Annx ‘D’
Multidisciplinary Flagship Program in Affiliated Colleges. GNDU
Program by Faculty 12+3 Stream (Multidisciplinary) B.Sc., B.A. & BVOC in Affiliated Colleges
The Faculty 12+3 Stream(Multidisciplinary) in Affiliated Colleges is the flagship program of GNDU
awarding various B.Sc, B.A. and BVOC Under Graduate(UG) degrees in affiliated colleges. Improving on
this curriculum and conforming to standard framework will have mass impact on quality of degrees to
revival of affiliated colleges campuses facing admission and revenue problems.
The Load of Science Stream Degree Programs & Challenges
Each Semester Discipline Specific Core (customised for stream) 2 courses in Science taught
with 1st course (Theory credit 2+Practical credit 2) and 2nd course (Theory credit 03 )..
Each credit one hour teaching for 15 weeks and given 25 marks weightage. Practical 6 hours
in chemistry equal 1 credit and 2 hours in physics equal 1 credit. Math has two theory papers
with credit 04 and 03.
Each Semester have load 21 credit, for 3 Discipline Specific Science Core(DSC) with
teaching load discipline Theories 17 hours and Practicasl Load 4 hours Physics and 6 hours
Chemistry totalling to 27 hours a week.
Adding the load of compulsory Punjabi 4 credit and Compulsory English 4 credits make
total load of 35 hours a week. With 5 days teaching it come to 7 hours daily.
Adding SEC and VAC another 2 hours each as per NEP 2020 will make it 39 hours a week
or 8 hours daily.
The Social Sciences teaches Discipline Specific Core(DSC) courses with 4 credit and 100 marks
each. Certain discipline like psychology has Theory credit 3 and Practical 1 credit. The Vocational
degrees can elect upto 2 electives from 2 group of vocational discipline.
In evolving system to NEP 2020 the Delhi University in last decades DU has made science
discipline courses of standard 4 credit, with two section of Theory parts each 2 credit or Theory and
Practical part of 2 credit each. The DU created discipline elective in year 3rd of UG degree etc.
Single Core Discipline Hon’s Degrees Programs in Campuses(Science Streams)
The implementation of credit based CBGS system in GNDU in past and making the UG/PG five
year integrated program(FYIP) Hon’s degrees in single core discipline in conformance with NEP
2020 already partially done. The structure of FYIP in science streams awarding UG and PG level
Hon’s degrees is as under:
PRESENT STRUCTURE OF GNDU SINGLE CORE DISCIPLINE FYIC (DATA DEPT OF PHYSICS)

The curriculum is rigidly biased towards a single major core discipline teaching compulsory
86 credits out of credit 145 credits in UG first three years, 128 credits out of 187 credits in
four years and 132 credit out of 233 credits in five years.
There is no flexibility in curriculum to pursue minor and study more interdisciplinary
courses.
The 4th year of the curriculum is well designed for pathway pursuing multidisciplinary
streams their 4th year to complete UG 4 years Hon’s degree with major.
The curriculum max Discipline Specific Electives are kept without practicals to keep credit
same for choices.
The framework lack mandatory elective programme on research methodologies as one of the
discipline specific elective (DSE) courses at VII semester needed for students, who opt for
writing dissertation on major/ minor at VIII semesters.
Faculty of Economics & Business B.Com. Degree Program Affiliated Colleges & FYIP Campus
Faculty of Economics and Commerce is presently running for colleges B.Com, B.Com(Hon’s) 3yr
Under Graduate(UG) degree programs in commerce stream. In addition the Faculty is running FYIP
M.Com. programs in campus.
The credit load of B.Com. and B.Com.(Hon’s) degrees in affiliated colleges as under
B.Com with 3 specialisation credit per semester 28. This include 5 paper in Discipline
Specific Core(DSC)/Allied Discipline and 4 credit of compulsory English and 4 credit of
compulsory Punjabi. To opt for one of specialisation four courses from same group (two
courses in Sem V and two course in Sem VI) has to be taken. This makes total in six
semesters 148 credit.
B.Com. (Hons) is awarded on studying additional 4 courses of credit 4 from single group
one each in Sem III to VI. This makes the total in six semesters 164 credit.
In campus the FYIP M.Com. (with exit Hon’s degree at both UG and PG level) and attempt to
conform NEP 2020 is run with haphazard distribution of credit load in semesters. The load of
semesters (Sem I-23, Sem II 21, Sem III 23, Sem IV 22, Sem V 26(with DSE), Sem VI-28 (with
DSE), Sem VII 22, Sem VIII 20 ) totalling to 143 credits in first six semesters. There is option
of e Discipline Specific Electives(DSE) and 12 credit dissertation in Sem IX with credit load 22
and Sem X with option two Discipline Specific Electives(DSE) with total load 20 credits. The
total load of five years is 187 credits.
Challenges, Mission and Innovations Implementing NEP 2020 : For Faculty 12+3
Multidisciplinary Stream B.Sc. B.A. BVOC Programs and Faculty of Economics and Business
B.Com. Programs in Affiliated Colleges GNDU
The challenges in existing system in implementing NEP 2020 as under
Excess credit load on college science stream degrees and B.Com.
Teach customised Discipline Specific Core(DSC) with compromise on depth and
standardisation in campus/affiliated colleges.
Difference in load of B.Sc. and B.A streams and making common framework a challenge.
B.Com. vast difference in load of college and campus degree(with NEP 2020 implemented).
The B.Com. (Hon’s) degrees in 3 years and specialisation in pass course at colleges be
preserved in new structure framework for B.Com.
Continue with teaching compulsory Punjabi and compulsory English at colleges for state
manpower resources creation and global needs.
The various innovations are proposed in succeeding para to max use existing system to
optimisation. The adaption of standardisation with flexibility and integrated framework with not
overburdening the student with excess credit load and faculty with repeated effort creating
curriculums for programs.
The 4 th year for UG 4 year degree to be made common with 1 st year M.Sc and student
multidisciplinary (3 core) to be guided to take more Discipline Specific Core(DSE) and
GEs from discipline to be pursued as major if going for 4 year UG degree or PG.
Flexibility of study additional few courses in 4 th year to make short for credits in major(80
needed). This will help those presently in 12+3 stream and passed out to go for additional
4th year and complete UG Hon’s 4 year degree program with major.
Continue with teach Punjabi/Mudali Punjabi/Punjabi History and Environmental Sc etc in
first 2 year to single core discipline Hon’s degree program and other multidisciplinary
degrees programs in campus made part common framework.
Innovations for teaching compulsory English and compulsory Punjabi to college streams.
Those have Punjabi as medium of Instruction in Disciplines Specific Cores(DSC’s) teach
English under AEC(3) and Punjab History under VAC(2). Those with English as medium of
Instruction for Disciplines Specific Cores(DSC’s,) teach compulsory Punjabi under AEC(3)
and communication skills, creative writing etc under VAC(2). This will make least addition
of extra credit load for already overloaded multidisciplinary science and B.Com. degree
programs in colleges.
The NEP 2020 purpose of keeping standard Discipline Specific Core(DSC) course with
credit 4 be introduced. This will do away with making separate customised Faculty 12+3
science discipline programs Disciplines Specific Core(DSC) courses. Few customised
Discipline Specific Elective(DSE) courses of standard credit 4 can be made combining
present credit 2 courses opted in colleges. This will make for same no of courses studied
presently and also bring Single Core Discipline degree programs in campus and
multidisciplinary program on same footings.
Presently the science degree programs of Faculty 12+3 in colleges are studying in each
three science Discipline Sem I to VI, .customised Discipline Specific Core(DSC) for Theory
12 courses (2x6+3x6) 30 credit + Practical 6 labs (2x6) 12 credit=Total 42 credit The single
core stream (Hon’) in campus studies Discipline Specific Core (DSC) Theory 13 courses
(4x13) 52 + Practical 8 labs (3x8) 24 = 76 credits in the given single discipline.
Faculty 12+3 multidiscipline degree programs in science disciplines in colleges, standard
Discipline Specific Core(DSC) Theory credit 4 & Practical credit 2 be made., One DSC
course each Semester put in framework will make Theory 24 +Practical 12=36 credit of
each discipline. This can be easily taken taken to 8 to 12 Discipline Specific courses taught
presently through elective DSE 4 credit merging 2 credit two existing course. The Math
stream can be made to study mandatory two DSE (better classified GE) credit 3 in Sem I
and Sem II to complete equal no of courses presently in six Semesters.
Choosing Discipline Specific Electives(DSE) as guided and offered for a stream as per
requirements will make the multidiscipline student study required no of Discipline as in past
in at least 2 disciplines with much more depth and pursue major in 4 th year. The options and
creation of interdisciplinary Generic Electives (GEs) with time will promote
interdisciplinary studies.
For Faculty of Economics & Business run B.Com. programs, continued provision of 3 year
Hon’s degree program in colleges with additional papers as in past through Discipline
Specific Electives(DSE) in Sem III and VI. Also the specialisation in given domain opting
group of Domain Specific Elective(DSE) in Sem V and Sem VI.
Fourth year for taking Honours degree with pathway to M.Com. FYIP 4 th year or 1st year of
2 year M.Com. degree program. The student can then have pathway for study another year
and take M.Com. degree.
The credit load per semester kept standard for a given stream(single, multidisciplinary,
B.Com.) across affiliated colleges and campus. The minor difference with selections
options can be adjusted through opting VAC of different credit(1-4).
The Standardised Courses all Disciples Campus and Affiliated Colleges with following:
Discipline Specific Core(DSC) and Discipline Specific Elective(DSE) course at all
level Theory 4 credit. Practical of Discipline Specific Core(DSC) and Discipline
Specific Elective(DSE) credit 3 in campus at all level and credit 2 in colleges at UG
level and credit 3 in PG level..
Generic Elective(GEs) at UG Theory 3 credits and Practical 2 credits. Generic
Elective(GEs) at PG level (4th & 5th year) Theory 4 credits and Practical 3 credits.
VAC course from credit 1 to 4 both with online study esp for 1 credit type and in
class delivery designed.
Dissertation in VIII th Semester credit 12 as presently done by University in its
single core Hon’s courses and the multidisciplinary joining 4 th year to complete UG
Hon’s 4 year program.
Provision of dissertation can be added in Sem X also. Other provisions as opting for
Academic Project/Entrepreneurship 12 credit can be added esp for Vocational
programs.
More Generic Electives(GE) from interdisciplinary can be designed for both campus
single core (Hon’s) degrees and Faculty 12+3 multidisciplinary for promoting
interdisciplinary studies.
UGC rules 15 hours teaching per semester one credit, a semester min 20 credit and UG degree with
min 120 credit followed. The Theory load for one hour per week equals one credit and
practical/field work load of 2 hours per week as 1 credit.
The standardised framework arrived for various degree programs single core, multidisciplinary and
B.Com. programs with these considerations is made in Annexure’s ‘B’ to ‘D’ on subsequent pages.
Guidelines to Implement
Each Department to use existing or design as needed, own Discipline Specific Core(DSC’s – 04
credits), Discipline Specific Electives(DES’s-4 credits), Generic Electives(GE’s-3 credits) and Skill
Enhancement Course(SEC 1 to 3 credits) of hands on experience.
The VAC courses(1 to 4 credits) can be from communication skills, creative writing, presentation
skills, sports & physical education and team work, promote critical thinking, Indian Knowledge
Systems, scientific temperament. Following departments can design courses.
AEC the existing courses of Environmental Sc continued and new added course to pool with time.
The colleges can teach compulsory Punjabi and english under AEC. Punjabi Language/Mudli
Punjabi/Punjab History with English(communication Skills etc) presently taught in Sem I and Sem
II of single core Hon’s, Engineering Stream(BCA, B.Sc. IT, BVOC), Biochemistry continued
taught under AEC(3)/VAC(2) .
SEC on use research facility equipments, resources & various software tools can be designed esp in
university campuses. Similarly SEC course at colleges be designed.
The UG 4 years degree 4th year will be common as present M.Sc/M/A./M.Com. 1 st year. PG
degrees framework 2nd year will be used existing with giving option of more Generic
Electives(GEs) in place existing DSEs to promote interdisciplinary studies. The writing of
Dissertation/Academic project/Entrepreneurship options 12 credit can also be given in Sem X for
promoting research and entrepreneurship.
Following Engineering Faculty, Specialised and Interdisciplinary Course will fit in standard
(single/multidisciplinary 3core/2core) frameworks or if needed additional framework designed.
BCA B.Sc IT BVOC etc

BBA, MBA and Bachelor of Tourism & Travel/HM & Catering
B.Tech. B. Pharma., B.Arch..
Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy- Bachelor of Physio therapy, MPT

The degrees like B.Sc. Computer Sc. single core discipline will be same as B.C.A. and may replace
in nomenclature to B.C.A. Further with 4 th year Hon’s option created will look more reputed and
will give competition to B.Tech. stream (skewed to computers). This will create avenues for
affiliated colleges and the campus.

The Hon’s degree degrees single core discipline awarded in campus mostly in science stream and
few in social sciences.
Faculty of Economics & Business run B.Com. degree in affiliated colleges, award Hon’s degree
also in 3 years with study 4 additional course. The study of compulsory English & compulsory
Punjabi mandatory inB.Com. colleges stream.
Professional degrees like B.Tech. MTech., B.Pharma. M.Pharma.etc mostly 4+2 yr Stream. These
degree are mostly run in universities campuses.
The existing system of awarding degrees has no provision awarding Hon’s with research or Hon’s
in field of study and award major and minors etc as per NEP 2020 policies.
The various degree programs have own customised Discipline Specific Core(DSC) and Discipline
Specific Elective(DSE) courses and their is lack of standardisation. This make writing too many
course syllabus on periodic basis and created a clutter to refer from on University site. Further lot of
different paper setting to evaluation increase load of teaching and administrative staff.
This also make difficult to club students from different streams for common courses offered.
Further the degrees has limited exit options in present system and no pathways to 4 year UG degree
with Honours research and major etc.
