The network slicing technology is used to divide a physical OLT into multiple logical
slices to achieve virtualization of the access network.
u The forwarding and control resources are virtualized, and each slice has unique
access to these resources to ensure forwarding security and enhance reliability
of private line services.
u The virtual access networks are managed based on authorization and domain
division. Each slice is independently planned, operated and managed, with
easier maintenance.
u The slice resources can be flexibly configured. Slicing based on cards, PON
ports, ONUs or combination of them is supported.
Version: B 21
AN6000 Series Optical Line Terminal Equipment Product Description
u Supports up to 16384 VXLAN segments for network isolation, which are far
more than the 4096 virtual network identifiers supported by VLAN. The
bottleneck on user isolation and identifiers is removed, and a large number of
tenants can be supported.
u When VXLAN encapsulation is used, only edge devices in the VXLAN need to
identify MAC addresses on the user side. This relieves the MAC address
learning pressure on other devices and improves their performance.

including VLAN and Layer 2 forwarding strategies.
5.4.1 VLAN
Basic Concept
The format of Ethernet frames is modified in the IEEE802.1Q. A four-byte VLAN tag
is inserted behind the source MAC address field to identify the logical domain of the
packet source equipment.
u Type: This field indicates the frame type. The value is set to 0x8100, indicating
that the frame carries a 802.1Q tag.
u User Priority: This field indicates user priority. The value ranges from 0 to 7,
standing for eight priority levels.
Benefits

5 Product Functions
u High security: Hosts in different VLANs cannot communicate with each other
directly. This enhances network security.
u Flexible services: The operators can plan their services flexibly through VLAN
management.

Highlights
u Virtual OLT: With the virtual OLT technology, multiple services can be carried by
one optical network. Based on the infrastructures provided by basic telecom
operators, different management domains are set for virtual network operators
to separate their services.
u QinQ VLAN: The VLAN tags defined in IEEE 802.1Q can identify a maximum of
4096 VLANs, which are insufficient to distinguish between a large number of
users in metro Ethernet. The QinQ technology solves this problem.
u Stacking VLAN: Users and services are well distinguished so that services of
different types can be delivered to users correctly and quickly.

5 Product Functions
Basic Concept
In the VLAN + MAC forwarding, after the packets are received by the switch, their
VLAN IDs, MAC addresses and port numbers are learned. The VLAN ID and MAC
address are used to search for the forwarding table and determine the No. of the
destination port, to which the packets are then forwarded.
Benefits
The SVLAN + CVLAN forwarding solves the following problems encountered by the
VLAN + MAC forwarding:
Version: B 67
AN6000 Series Optical Line Terminal Equipment Product Description
Hightlights
Instead of being learned dynamically, the entries of the SVLAN + CVLAN forwarding
table are created automatically by the system during creation of the service flow.
The forwarding table entries are used to determine the uplink port for forwarding the
uplink packets and the service virtual port for forwarding the downlink packets.
In the SVLAN + CVLAN forwarding, the service channels need not learn the MAC
addresses. This helps prevent leakage of user information and MAC address
spoofing and attacks after the MAC addresses are aged due to limited number of
MAC addresses, and enhance the system security.

Benefits of VXLAN:
Network Diagram
The VXLAN tunnel technology has now been widely used in data centers. With the
development of telecoms network virtualization and data centralization, a large
number of services are shifted to the cloud-end virtual machines. Accordingly,
service functional pools, e.g. vBRAS, come into being. This not only makes services
more flexible and scalable, but also integrates services to enhance equipment
utilization. The OLT supports the VTEP function and can set up VXLAN connections
with virtual machines in the data center equipment room. When the number of
tenants increases, vBRAS can use the VXLAN technology to identify them. In this
way, a large number of tenants are supported.

5.9 VPN
5.9.1 VRF
Basic Concept
The AN6000 Series categorize VRFs by VLANs to provide L3VPN solutions. All the
packets or related protocols on the Layer 3 interface of a VRF are processed only in
this VRF, which is unrelated to other VRFs. In this way, the services or users can be
isolated, and the IP addresses can be saved.
Multiple virtual routing devices can be created on the AN6000 Series. That is,
multiple L3VPNs can be established to implement Layer 3 isolation and
independent packet forwarding among different VRFs. Moreover, an IP address can
be reused in different VRFs, and DHCP relay multi-instances, routing multi-
instances, and independent route forwarding tables are supported.
Scenarios
u When the triple play service is provisioned to GPON access users, different
services are isolated from each other by VRF, and all services of the device are
carried and go upstream by the same physical link. One VLAN Layer 3
interface can be bound to only one VR, and the upstream port belongs to
multiple Layer 3 interfaces. Different VLAN Layer 3 interfaces are bound to
different VRs, and each VR forwards data according to the route learned by this
VR.
u When the triple play service is provisioned to GPON access users, different
services are isolated from each other by VRF, and all services of the device are
carried and go upstream by two or more physical links. The links in this case
are in the Layer 3 mode, and different services are isolated from each other by
VRF.
Version: B 79
AN6000 Series Optical Line Terminal Equipment Product Description
Features
u Users in different VRFs can obtain IP addresses via DHCP Relay or DHCP
Proxy.
u The static routes and dynamic routes in each VRF do not affect each other, and
the routing table entries in each VRF implement the routing functions
independently.
Basic Concept
Virtual Private Wire Service (VPWS) is a Layer 2 virtual private network (VPN)
technology for point-to-point transmission. It implements one-to-one mappings
between attachment circuits (ACs) and pseudo wires (PWs). By means of binding
local ACs, PWs and the opposite ACs, virtual circuits are formed and Layer 2
services between subscribers can be transparently transmitted. As a point-to-point
virtual private line technology, VPWS supports almost all the link layer protocols.
Concept Description
80 Version: B
5 Product Functions
Typical Network
The IP data network keeps on developing and has good performance in scalability,
upgrading and compatibility. VPWS is a solution to fully exploit the resources of
traditional communication networks or public networks and integrate them with
current packet networks. For details, see Figure 5-4.

u Smooth upgrade of the network. With VPWS. subscribers do not even learn
that MPLS L2VPN exists on the network. When operators upgrade the network
from the traditional Layer 2 VPN such as ATM and FR to the MPLS L2VPN,
subscribers do not need to update any configurations, except that there may be
data loss for a short time during network switching.
Basic Concept
Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) is a Layer 2 VPN technology for simulating
LANs. Using VPLS, each L2VPN considers an NE as a virtual switching instance
(VSI), and this VSI is used to achieve mapping between multiple ACs and PWs, and
connect multiple Ethernet LANs so that the LANs work as if they are one LAN.
VPLS enables SPs to provide Ethernet-based multipoint services over the MPLS

Concept Description
Typical Network
With business expansion, more and more enterprises establish branches in different
areas and employees are often on business trips. Therefore, some applications
(such as the VoIP, instant messages and network conference) are getting widely
used in enterprises. These applications require a network that supports point-to-
multipoint (P2MP) services. In addition, data security and network reliability must be
ensured. The VPLS technology is suitable for such a scenario, through which
enterprise networks built by existing Ethernet technologies can be interconnected,
as illustrated in Figure 5-5, to provide WAN services.

This section introduces the Layer 3 functions supported by the AN6000 Series,
including OSPF, DHCP Relay and ARP Proxy.
5.11.1 OSPFv2
Basic Concept
Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) is an interior Gateway protocol based on link
states. Due to its openness, the protocol is widely used in the industry, and
contributes to the fast and efficient transmission of packets in the network.
Concept Description
Autonomous system (AS) refers to a group of routers using the same routing protocol to
Autonomous system
exchange routing information among them.
To run OSPF, a router must have a router ID (RID). RID is a 32-bit unsigned integer, which
Router ID
identifies a router in an autonomous system (AS).
88 Version: B
5 Product Functions
Concept Description
OSPF areas include common areas, Stub areas and NSSA areas.
u Common area: By default, OSPF areas are defined as common areas.
4 Standard area: A generally used area, which transmits intra-area, inter-area, and
external routes.
4 Backbone area: connects to all other OSPF areas and transmits inter-area routes.
Routes between non-backbone areas must be forwarded through the backbone
area.
u Stub area: A stub area is a non-backbone area with only one ABR and generally resides
Area type at the border of an AS. The area border router (ABR) in a stub area does not transmit
received AS external routes, which significantly decreases the number of entries in the
routing table on the ABR and the amount of routing information to be transmitted. To
ensure the reachability of AS external routes, the ABR in the stub area generates a
default route and advertises the route to non-ABRs in the stub area.
u NSSA area: An NSSA is similar to a stub area. An NSSA does not advertise Type 5 LSAs
but can import AS external routes. ASBRs in an NSSA generate Type 7 LSAs to carry the
information about the AS external routes. The Type 7 LSAs are advertised only within the
NSSA. When the Type 7 LSAs reach an ABR in the NSSA, the ABR translates the Type 7
LSAs into Type 5 LSAs and floods them to the entire AS.
u Hello packets: Hello packets are periodically sent on OSPF interfaces to establish and
maintain neighbor relationships. A Hello packet includes information about the
designated router (DR), backup designated router (BDR), and known neighbors.
u Database description (DD) packet: A DD packet contains the summaries of LSAs in the
local LSDB. DD packets are used for LSDB synchronization between two routers.
u Link state request (LSR) packet: LSR packets are sent to OSPF neighbors to request
Packet type
needed LSAs. A router sends LSR packets to its OSPF neighbor only after DD packets
have been successfully exchanged between them.
u Link state update (LSU) packet: LSU packets are used to transmit required LSAs to
OSPF neighbors.
u Link state acknowledgment (LSAck) packet: LSAck packets are used to acknowledge
received LSAs.
Version: B 89
AN6000 Series Optical Line Terminal Equipment Product Description
Concept Description
OSPF encapsulates routing information into LSAs for transmission. Common LSA types are
as follows:
u Router LSA (Type 1): Describes the link status and cost of a router. Router-LSAs are
generated by a router and advertised within the area which the router belongs to.
u Network LSA (Type 2): Describes the link status of all routers on the local network
segment. Network LSAs are generated by a DR and advertised within the area which the
DR belongs to.
u Network summary LSA (Type 3): Describes routes on a network segment. Network-
summary LSAs are generated by an area border router (ABR) and are advertised to the
LSA type areas except the area which the ASBR belongs to.
u ASBR summary LSA (Type 4): Describes routes to an autonomous system boundary
router (ASBR) in an area. ASBR summary LSAs are generated by an ABR and are
advertised to the areas concerned.
u AS external LSA (Type 5): Describes AS external routes, which are advertised to all
areas except stub and NSSA areas. AS-external-LSAs are generated by an ASBR.
u NSSA external LSA (Type7): Describes AS external routes. NSSA LSAs are generated
by an ASBR and advertised only within NSSAs.
u Opaque LSA (Type9 / Type10 / Type11): Provides a general mechanism for extended
OSPF applications. Type 9, Type10 and Type11 are flooded to different areas.
u Neighbor relationship: After the local router starts, it uses an OSPF interface to send a
Hello packet to the remote router. After the remote router receives the packet, it checks
Neighbor and whether the parameters carried in the packet are consistent with its own parameters. If
adjacency yes, the local and remote routers establish a neighbor relationship between them.
u Adjacency: After the local and remote routers establish a neighbor relationship, they
exchange DD packets and LSAs and synchronize the LSDB to establish an adjacency.
u OSPF version 2 (OSPFv2), which is defined in RFC 2328, is intended for IPv4.
u OSPF version 3 (OSPFv3), which is defined in RFC 2740, is intended for IPv6.

Basic Concept
DHCP Relay allows an OLT to forward DHCP packets between DHCP clients and
the DHCP server that are in different network segments. DHCP clients can therefore
obtain the IP addresses dynamically allocated by the DHCP server.
92 Version: B
5 Product Functions
Benefits
If the DHCP relay feature is not supported, the DHCP protocol takes effect only
when the DHCP clients and the DHCP server are in the same network segment. If
they are in different network segments, each network segment requires a DHCP
server, which increases deployment costs. The DHCP relay feature solves this
issue. With this feature, one DHCP server can serve multiple DHCP clients in
different network segments. This not only reduces deployment costs but also
facilitates centralized management of the DHCP clients.
Version: B 93

Highlights
u Enabling the DHCP Relay function based on VLAN: The DHCP Relay function
is based on VLANIF. That is, the DHCP Relay can be enabled in a service
VLAN, and the DHCP forwarding flow in other service VLANs will not be
affected.
u Supporting the DHCP Option 60: A DHCP server group can be specified for
users in different Option 60 domains identified by the DHCP Option60 fields.
The table below lists the specifications of DHCP Relay supported by the equipment.
Function Specification
94 Version: B
5 Product Functions
Basic Concept
DHCPv6 Relay (in an IPv6 network) functions in a similar way to DHCPv4 Relay (in
an IPv4 network). For details about the concept, network application, functions and
highlights, see DHCP Relay.
Benefits
DHCPv6 Relay enables the equipment to forward DHCPv6 packets across network
segments. DHCPv6 clients can therefore obtain IP addresses dynamically allocated
by a DHCPv6 server in a different network segment.
Client-Stateless mode
Basic Concept
ARP Proxy is implemented as follows: A host sends an ARP request to another host
located in the same network segment but not in the same physical network. Then
the ARP Proxy-enabled device connected to the two hosts replies to the request.
ARP Proxy allows isolated users in a VLAN or different Sub VLANs to communicate
with each other. In this way, all the terminal equipment in the same network segment
can communicate with each other. Meanwhile, the details of the physical network
are unavailable, and the division of networks into subnets is transparent to hosts.
Version: B 95

Benefits
u Enhancing network security: The upper layer network cannot learn the MAC
addresses on the user side, so that MAC spoofing and broadcast storm can be
avoided.

5.13 QoS
Basic Concept
QoS is the short form of quality of service. This function is applied to comprehensive
scheduling of traffics for different services and users to ensure that the quality of
services in the network is satisfactory to operators.
QoS is not a single technology, but the combination of multiple technologies such as
priority processing, traffic policing, congestion control, traffic classification, and
traffic shaping.
Indexes used to measure QoS include bandwidth, latency, jitter, and packet loss
rate.
HQoS is a technology to ensure bandwidth for multiple users and services using a
hierarchical scheduling mechanism.
Benefits
u Enhancing bandwidth utilization rate: QoS can control network traffic in real
time through appropriate allocation measures to make best use of bandwidth.
u Ensuring quality of key services: Ensures the quality of services for VIP
customers through measures such as early drop and queue scheduling.
u Fair and differentiated services: QoS provides fair competition mechanism for
services of the same type and differentiated competition for services of different
types. This enriches the OAM measures for operators.
Version: B 99
AN6000 Series Optical Line Terminal Equipment Product Description
u Management and scheduling for multiple users and services: HQoS supports
unified management and hierarchical scheduling for multiple users and
services to ensure their bandwidth.
Network Diagram
With abundant traffic classification rules, the AN6000 Series can precisely identify
packets in a network, and map them to appropriate priorities. By virtue of queue
scheduling and traffic monitoring for these packets, bandwidth can be allocated
reasonably to ensure stability of services. Besides that, hierarchical scheduling can
be implemented based on traffic flows, ONUs, or PON ports.
Hightlights
u Supports fine HQoS. Hierarchical scheduling and control of service flow allows
fair allocation of bandwidth to users in an RSP or different RSPs.

5.14.2 ERPS
Basic Concept
ERPS is a kind of network protection technology based on Ethernet ring. The ERPS
protocol is used to control the port status and thereby protect the ring network
automatically. The protection switching can be completed in a short time. For this
reason, the ERPS is widely used in networks.
104 Version: B
5 Product Functions
Benefits
u The convergence time is irrelevant with the number of nodes in the ring network.
ERPS has better performance in convergence than traditional STP in
complicated networks.
Network Diagram
As illustrated in the figure below, three OLTs make up an ERPS ring. The ring has
two ERPS ring instances, which correspond to two kinds of services on the user
side respectively. For different ring instances, the OLT ports can be set to different
blocking states. As shown in the figure, two service flows come into being to share
the load on links.
Hightlights
u Supports the Polling mechanism. The master node on the ERPS ring sends
probe messages to detect the ring network state actively.

Ethernet ports can be set to "forced" or "auto-negotiation").
5.14.3 MSTP
Basic Concept
In the Layer 2 switched network, a loop in the network will cause infinite loop and
proliferation of packets, which leads to broadcast storm and occupies all bandwidth
available so that the network becomes unusable. As defined by the IEEE 802.1s,
the Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) is compatible with STP and RSTP, and
can compensate for the defects of them.
Benefits
106 Version: B
5 Product Functions
u The MSTP features fast convergence, and allows the traffics in different VLANs
to be forwarded along their own paths, so as to provide a better load balancing
mechanism for redundancy links.
u The MSTP prunes a loop network into a loop-free tree network. This helps
avoid infinite loop and proliferation of packets.
Network Diagram
A, B and C are the OLT equipment running the MSTP in the MST region, and C is
the root of the region.
Each MST region may have multiple spanning trees (MST). Each spanning tree
corresponds to a spanning tree instance (STI), and multiple spanning trees
correspond to multiple spanning tree instances (MSTI). In this network diagram,
VLAN 10 is mapped into MST 1, and other VLANs are mapped into MST 0.
