5
SAxxxx Flow sensor

3 Intended use
The unit monitors liquids and gases.
It detects the process categories flow and medium temperature.

3.1 Application area

• Air
• Water
• Glycol solutions (reference medium: 35 % ethylene glycol solution)
• Low-viscosity oils (viscosity: ≤ 40 mm²/s at 40 °C /≤ 40 cSt at 104 °F)
• High-viscosity oils (viscosity: ≥ 40 mm²/s at 40 °C / ≥ 40 cSt at 104 °F)

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC):

This is a class A product. This product may cause radio interference in domestic areas:
u If required, take appropriate EMC screening measures.

3.2 Restriction of the application area

• Rapid temperature changes:
Due to the thermal operating principle, the sensor tip placed in the medium must assume the
temperature of the medium in order to achieve the specified accuracy. Rapid and uneven
temperature changes can cause temporary misinterpretation.
• Temperature stratification:
There must be no temperature stratification in the medium to be measured. Temperature
differences within the cross section lead to misinterpretation of the measuring signal.
• Phase mixtures:
The medium to be measured must be completely mixed. Different thermal conductivities due to
phase differences lead to misinterpretation of the measuring signal.
• Medium selection:
The sensor has different characteristics that can be selected via the [MEdI] parameter. Note: For all
media listed in the "Note on media" (Ò data sheet), only the repeatability specified in the data
sheet applies.
• Deposits:
Deposits lead to incorrect measurements of the sensor due to their insulating effect. If there is a
risk of biological or additive deposits, refer to the maintenance recommendation in the
"Maintenance, repair and disposal" section.

10.4.1 Switching signal

A switching signal can be output for process value monitoring. OUTx changes its switching state when
the set switching limits are exceeded or not reached. You can choose between hysteresis and window
function.

Hysteresis function:
1: Process value
1 t: Time
SP: Set point
rP: Reset point

Fig. 17: Hysteresis function

When the hysteresis function is set, the set point [SP] and the reset point [rP] are defined. The
rP value must be lower than the SP value. The distance between SP and rP is at least 4 % of
the final value of the measuring range (= hysteresis). If only the set point is changed, the reset
point is changed automatically; the difference remains constant.

Window function:
1: Process value
1 FE FE t: Time
FH: Upper limit value
FH HY FL: Lower limit value
HY: Hysteresis
FL HY FE: Window area
Fno: Window function NO (normally open)
t Fnc: Window function NC (normally closed)

Fig. 18: Window function

When set to the window function the upper limit value [FH] and the lower limit value [FL] are
defined. The distance between FH and FL is at least 4 % of the final value of the measuring
range. FH and FL have a fixed hysteresis of 0.25 % of the final value of the measuring range.
This helps keep the switching status of the output stable if the flow rate varies slightly.
