Q-1: The time distribution of a storm event is given in the following figure. The
phi-index is computed to be 1.3 cm/hr and the catchment area is 0.9Km^2. Find out the
runoff coefficient for the catchment and also find the volume of total infiltration.
Time from Start
30 60 90 120 150 180 210 240
(min)

Cumulative
0.5 1.9 4.9 7.3 9.2 9.9 11.1 12
Rainfall(cm)

Solution: Given, Phi-index = 1.3 cm/hr. So, Infiltration = 1.3x30/60 = 0.65cm/30 mins.
Time from Start Total Time =
30 60 90 120 150 180 210 240
(min) 1080 mins

Cumulative
0.5 1.9 4.9 7.3 9.2 9.9 11.1 12
Rainfall (cm)

Incremental 0.5 1.2 3.0 2.4 1.9 0.7 1.2 0.9 Total Rainfall, P=
Rainfall (cm) 11.8 cm

Infiltration (cm) 0.65 0.65 0.65 0.65 0.65 0.65 0.65 0.65 Total Infiltration,
f= 5.2 cm

Run-off (cm) 0 0.55 2.35 1.75 1.25 0.05 0.55 0.25 Total Runoff,
R=6.75 cm

Runoff coefficient, C = R/P = 6.75/11.8 = 0.57.

Total infiltration volume, Vf = (5.2x10^-2)x(0.9x10^6) = 46,800 cum.
Q-2: A sandy loam soil holds water at 140 mm/m depth between field capacity and
permanent wilting point. The root depth of the crop is 30 cm and the allowable
depletion of water is 35%. The daily water use by crop is 5 mm/day. The area to be
irrigated is 60 ha and water can be diverted at 28 liter/s. The irrigation application
efficiency is 40%. There are no rainfall and groundwater contribution. Determine the
frequency of irrigation, the net application depth of water and the volume of water
required to irrigate 60 ha.
Q-3: a) Determine the scour depth for a river to carry a discharge of 2500 cumec and
the average particle size of river bed is 0.15mm. Use Lacy's theory. [3]
b) Determine the time required to irrigate a strip of land of 0.04 hectares in area
from a tube-well with a discharge of 0.02 cumec. The infiltration capacity of the soil
may be taken as 5 cm/h and the average depth of flow on the field as 10 cm. Also
determine the maximum area that can be irrigated from this tube well. [5]
Q-4: A crest vertical curve is to be designed to join a +3% grade with a -2% grade at a
section of two lane highway. Determine the stopping sight distance, if the design speed
of the highway is 60 mph and a perception reaction time is 2.5 second. The deceleration
rate for braking is 11.2 ft/s^2.
Q-5: As part of a class project, a group of students collected a total of 120 spot speed
samples at a location and determined from this data that the standard variation of the
speeds was 6 mi/h. If the project required that the confidence level be 95% and the limit
of acceptable error was 1.5 mi/h, determine whether these students satisfied the project
requirement.
Q-6: a) Draw the schematic diagram of access function vs. movement function. [3]
b) Determine the red interval at an intersection whose width is 40ft, the maximum
allowable speed on the approach road is 30 mph. Assume average length of vehicle is
20 ft. [4]
Q-7: A signalized intersection approach has two lanes with no left or right turning lanes.
Actual green time is 40 seconds out of 75 seconds. Starting lost time is 2sec/phase and
clearance lost time is 1.5 sec/phase. Saturation headway is 2.25 sec/vehicle. Find the
capacity of the intersection.
Q-8: Find the shortest length for a steel column with pinned in one end and fixed in
another end. The cross sectional area is 80 by 120 mm. Assume E=200 GPa and the
proportional limit to be 270 MPa.
Q-9: Calculate the unknown mentioned in the following
figure. Given, modulus of elasticity is 29000 ksi and
poisson's ratio is 0.3.
Q-10: Draw SFD and BMD for the following figure.
