they mean. Students should be able to show
evidence of their learning by creating their own
eBook.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will observe, identify and communicate about different weather patterns, providing
evidence of learning through creating an eBook about weather.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

I will introduce the lesson by stating our learning goals for the lesson as an “I can” statement,
“I can observe and identify different weather patterns, communicate them with my
classmates and show my learning in an eBook creation.” Next, I will hook their attention by
playing the Brain Pop video on weather patterns. After the video, we will go over an anchor
chart that shows students what different weather patterns mean and how we can identify
them. We will move to the book where we will read through the book together. When Sadie
looks at the weather, I will stop reading and have students predict what weather before the
book tells us. This will allow me to assess all the students with a formative assessment to see
if my students need further review of the weather patterns. After ensuring that all my
students are comfortable with the topic of weather patterns, we will move into utilizing
technology. I will instruct students to create an eBook using PowerPoint on the topic of
weather patterns to show evidence of their learning. Students will be aware of their goals of
this eBook by explaining the rubric and requirements to them. They will have creative
freedom to choose what images, characters and the plot that the story will follow. Feedback
will be provided to students through walking around the classroom and making sure students
are using correct information in their eBooks. Students will then read their book to the class
and share their insights. I will conclude the lesson by challenging students to observe the
weather around them throughout the week.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
Power Point is a great BPT that allows students to use creative freedom to create a variety of
projects to help integrate different students learning styles. This software allows students to

show evidence of learning through the format that best fits their learning needs as well.
Engagement can look like a variety of different things in the classroom, in this particular
lesson there will be time limits placed on each part of the activity to ensure all students are
on task and will finish in a timely manner. For example, when students are finding what
weather patterns they will choose to include, there will be a time limit and when they are
creating their storyboard there will also be a time limit. Students will also have the
opportunity to experience co-engagement to work with a partner on this project to work on
their teamwork and communication skills.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The BPT I selected, Power point, supports all learners because of the variety of tools that the
software provides for student use. For example, if a student is visually impaired, they can
make the text larger or choose a different colored font. It could also support students who
have trouble reading because allowing them to use the voice recording feature allows them
to assist students who may still be developing readers. Power Point supports and enhances
the learning experience for all students in the classroom by having them reach the highest
level of Bloom’s Taxonomy which is creating, when students can create a new model based
on a content area we can be confident as teachers that they have mastered the lesson.
Overall, this activity I have planned for the students best supports the UDL level of Action and
Expression which describes the various ways students can express the material that they
know. My students creating an eBook on the weather patterns on Power Point gives them a
variety of ways that they can express what they have learned about different weather
patterns.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I believe that the lesson I created will impact students learning because it allows them to
learn about weather patterns by not only listening to the book but reading it and then
making their own eBook to provide evidence of their learning. I feel that these activities will
impact student learning in a positive way because it allows students to use their creative
abilities, expand their skills within technology use and collaborate with other students. I look
forward to implementing the creative freedom through Power Point and seeing what my
students come up with as well as seeing their personality shine through it.
