of women educators
and excellence in education.
Dear Sisters,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. It is getting close to the
time of year for us to meet again. Our first meeting this year will be at Hoge’s
Restaurant in East Liverpool on Tuesday, March 14, at 5:30 PM. Our guest
speaker will be talking about domestic abuse, which is our state president,
Melody McGee’s, initiative. Hope to see all of you there.
A few of us are planning on meeting in February to develop a survey
that we will be passing out at our March meeting. This survey will take a look at
Contact us: the days, times, places, and ideas for guest speakers that will help the new
officers develop the yearly program. As you know it has been a challenge the
last few years developing a program that will fit everybody’s needs. If you are
Linda Lipp, Editor interested in helping develop the survey, give me a call or send an email and I
Cell phone: 234-567-1591 will give you details about our meeting.
Email: readmylipp@gmail.com We are looking for some people to step up to be officers. If you are
interested in being an officer, please contact someone on the nominating
committee – Gayle Noel, Colleen Mathias, or Pam Todd. Being an officer is
very rewarding. I have enjoyed my time as your president. All of you have been
a great support and help to me during this time.
We’re on the Web! Before I close this letter, I want to thank all of you for your generosity.
Thank you so much for all the donations you brought to the November meeting
Ohio State Organization of DKG for the Christina House. They were quite happy and surprised with our
htpp://www.dkgohio.org donations. Thank you also for the generous donations to the scholarship fund.
We will continue to collect for the scholarship fund at our remaining meetings
Delta Kappa Gamma International this year. I look forward to seeing you soon!

Our Awesome Autumn Meetings
September 13, 2023- Hippley Gardens, Garden Spot of Columbiana
Alpha Iota members gathered in the community room of the beautiful Hippley
Gardens for their first meeting of the new school year. After enjoying a tasty
selection of dinner salads from Sweet Melissa’s, President Nancy Perkins welcomed
everyone and conducted a short business meeting. Later, we broke into small groups
to explore the gardens for ourselves. It can take an hour or more to visit the entire
three-acre property, designed and created by owner, Mr. John Hippley, a retired
horticulture teacher, in 1999. The gardens consist of eight separate areas, each with
unique themes, eight waterfalls, and a special children’s area featuring a book-
borrowing shed and a huge set of piano keys on the ground (at least an octave) that really play when someone steps on
them! The newest addition to the gardens is a large pool with goldfish and koi, and a rock ledge terrace with more
waterfalls above the pool to the south. The gardens are constantly changing and include many seasonal displays, as well.
For guided tours and use of the community room, reservations are necessary (everything is by donation only).
October 18, 2023- Wellsville River Museum, Part III
Before heading down to the museum, Alpha Iota members stopped to
sample some of the famous down-home cooking of, none other than,
Someplace Else! Prior to dinner, Nancy Perkins conducted a short meeting
in which she noted that she and Barb Lipp had just attended the State
Executive Board meeting in Columbus on September 30th. She also
informed us that domestic violence has been chosen as the state initiative
by Melodie McGee, new President of the Ohio State Organization for the
2023-2025 biennium. In view of this, our Executive Board has decided to
support the local domestic violence center in Lisbon, the Christina House.
We were asked to collect paper products, pillows, bath towels/wash cloths,
dish towels/dish cloths, and laundry baskets to bring to our next meeting in
November. It was also announced that Pam Todd has accepted the position
of Chapter Webmaster. Congratulations to Gayle Noel who received her 40 year membership pin at this meeting! At last we
were on our way to the museum. Having been down to southern Columbiana County twice in the past to visit this very special
destination, we finally managed to make it to the top floor of the Wellsville River Museum! Who could have imagined how
much more there was left to see up there?? For those who have never been there, the museum is housed in a picturesque 1870
Victorian home located in downtown Wellsville, on the banks of the beautiful Ohio River. This three-story home, featuring
eleven themed rooms of furnishings and artifacts, originally belonged to a nineteenth century Wellsville doctor. Because of its
centralized location on the busy Ohio River and its bountiful natural resources, the village of Wellsville rose in prominence
beginning in the late 19th century in the areas of transportation, commerce and pottery production. The upper-most rooms of the
museum are dedicated to ships, trains, pottery and slumber. We wish to thank the Wellsville Historical Society and our
friendly, informative tour guides, Tom and Joan Davidson, for taking us on another delightful journey into our area’s past. More
pictures of the museum excursion are on the last
page of the newsletter.

November 14, 2023- Leetonia Library

Collection for Christina House

In November, Alpha Iotans enjoyed a

delicious, pot-luck dinner in the community
room of the Leetonia Library. The response
to President Nancy Perkins’ request last
month for items to be donated to Christina
House was overwhelming, to say the least. It
almost looked like Christmas had arrived
early! A picture of the group, along with the
items donated, was also included in the
January 1, 2024, edition of our state
newsletter, “The Voice”. Our program in November was “Getting to Know You”, which gave us the opportunity
to share information about ourselves and our families with the rest of the group. Several of us have had very
interesting pasts…as well as, presents! Truthfully, we have all been blessed, both individually and collectively!
It is wonderful to be part of such a kind, caring, fun-loving group as Alpha Iota! (P.S. Thanks, everyone, for the
sweet singing of “Happy Birthday” as I arrived for this meeting. It was music to my ears!)

December 6, 2023- Salem
All Aboard the Quakertown Trolley

Ezio’s Restaurant in Salem, was the setting

of Alpha Iota’s final meeting of 2023. Jaunty
little gnome ornaments, handcrafted by Pam
Todd in a variety of colors and styles, served as
festive favors for this very memorable evening.
After hearing a few remarks from our President, Nancy Perkins, and
enjoying a fine dining experience of Italian cuisine, a hardy band of
adventurous Alpha Iota sisters climbed aboard the Salem Historical
Society’s “Quakertown Trolley” for a one-hour tour of the Christmas
lights and sights of Salem. With apologies to the horse lovers among
us, riding in the cozy, comfortable trolley with piped in Christmas
music, where each person was able to have a window seat, seemed far
more appealing than a one-horse open sleigh! I think the majority of us
would agree that the most amazing, mind-blowing Christmas light
display had to be at the residence of Bob and Linda Sebo, prominent
Salem citizens and philanthropists. It seemed to go on for miles,
though it was probably no more than a city block in length. This whole
experience made for a truly holly-jolly night, if there ever was one!
We’d like to thank the Salem Historical Society, our friendly tour
guide, Sherry Ayers, and the trolley driver for making this special
event possible.
