Handumanan, Bacolod City ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 1 SCIENCE 5 - QUARTER 3 Lesson 1: Motion in Terms of Distance and Time 1. Notes. ‘Motion - is the change in position of an object. It is described in terms of an object’s changes in position (displacement) or distance travelled over a period of time. - It is described in terms of speed or velocity of the moving objects. Reference Point -is a place or object used as a basis for comparison to determine if something is motion. The object is said to be in motion if it changes in position relative to a reference point. ced objects like a building, a post, a tree, or a signboard could be a good reference point. Force ~ causes motion. Friction - is the resistance to motion. It is caused by two objects that are moving or rubbing against each other. It results to heat. ‘Mass - is the total amount of matter in an object. SI or International System of Units — a modern metric system that is used by everyone around the world. Physical Quantities and their Units of Measurement 1. Distance (d) - describes the length of a line between two points or the length of a path travelled. It tells how far an object traveled. Units: a. Meter (m)- basic unit of distance. Used to measure short distances. b. Kilometer (km)- used to measure long or far distances. ¢. Centimeter (em) ~ used to measure very short distances. d. Millimeter (mm)- used to measure the shortest distances, 2. Time (tj — the continuous sequence of events taking place. It measures how long is the duration of an action. Units: @. Hour (hr) is equal to 60 minutes Bb. Minute (min) - is equal to 60 seconds ©. Seconds (sec)~ shortest unit of time Displacement (4 )- is the length between the original (reference point) and final position of the object with a given direction. Units: 10 m, North 50 km, South Sm, West 22 mm, East 4. Velocity (9) - is the rate of change in position (displacement) over a period of time (speed + direction) Units: 2 m/min, East 32 cm/sec, West 20 km/hr, North _—-2 m/sec, South
