COMPACTION

A. PURPOSE

The purpose of the Method Statement for Compaction is to provide guidelines

for the compaction of soil or aggregate materials. It aims to ensure that compaction
works are carried out systematically, safely, and in compliance with project
specifications and relevant standards. The primary goal is to achieve the required
density and stability of the compacted material.

B. SCOPE

The scope of the work is the compaction of soil or aggregate materials at the
specified locations according to the project drawings and specifications. It includes all
activities from site preparation to the completion of compaction, ensuring that the
finished work meets the engineering and safety requirements.

C. MANPOWER REQUIREMENT

 Project Manager
 Site engineer
 Safety Engineer/Officer
 Surveyor
 Compaction Crew
 Quality Control Inspector

D. MATERIALS REQUIRED

 Compaction equipment (e.g., vibratory rollers, plate compactors)

 Surveying instruments (e.g., levels, theodolites)
 Moisture content testing equipment
 Safety equipment (helmets, gloves, safety vests)
 Barricades and warning signs
 Water tankers (if water is needed for moisture control)
 Backhoe or excavator (for initial site preparation)
 Suitable backfill materials (e.g., gravel, sand, crushed stone, fill, crushed
concrete)
 Water (if needed for moisture control)

E. PERSONNEL RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Manager
1. Ensuring that the project works in his zone are carried out in accordance with
Company policies and in accordance with the requirements of this Quality
plan.

Vision: A globally competitive university for science, technology, and environmental conservation.
Mission: Development of a highly competitive human resource, cutting-edge scientific knowledge and
innovative technologies for sustainable communities and environment.
2. Ensuring the full compliance of subcontractors with Company Quality policies
and with the requirements of this Quality plan.
3. To guide specific attention to all safety measures in coordination with the
safety officer/engineer.
4. Approval of the compaction plan.
Site Engineer
1. Ensure the area is ready and safe to start the work.
2. Ensure the works are carried out according to the specification, quality, and
approved shop drawings.
3. Coordination with surveyors for site measurements.
4. Inspection of the compacted areas and verification of achieved density.
5. Allocation of required manpower through coordination with the Project
Manager.
6. Ensure that the risk assessments for the work are understood by all and
implemented on-site.
7. Take precautionary measures with regard to protecting workers from hot
weather, wind, rain, and sun.
QA/QC Engineer/Inspector
1. Ensuring that Consultant/Client inspection requests are implemented.
2. Compilation of all necessary quality control checklists.
3. Assisting Consultants during the Inspections.
4. Conduct Proctor Tests to determine optimum moisture content and maximum
dry density.
5. Monitor compaction efforts with density tests at specified intervals.
6. Completion of documentation to verify the work performed.
Surveyor
1. To establish benchmarks and agreed reference points.
2. Provide required setting out and level markings.
3. Conducting regular surveys to verify the achieved compaction levels.
4. Maintain survey details and reports, periodically check the progressing works,
and advise the project manager of any deviation from the drawings.
Compaction Crew
1. Operation of compaction equipment as per the manufacturer's guidelines.
2. Regular monitoring of compaction process and adjustment of equipment
settings.
3. Reporting any issues or deviations from the compaction plan.
Safety Officer
1. Ensuring that all safety measures are in place and followed.
2. Conducting safety briefings for personnel involved in compaction works.
F. PROCEDURE

Site Preparation
1. Clear the site of any debris or vegetation using the backhoe or excavator.
2. Establish reference points and benchmarks for surveying.
Compaction Plan
1. Develop a compaction plan based on project specifications and soil
engineering reports.
2. Determine the number of passes required and the type of compaction
equipment to be used.
Moisture Content Control
1. Monitor the moisture content of the soil or aggregate to ensure optimal
compaction.
2. Adjust water content as needed using water tankers.
Compaction Process
1. Conduct initial compaction passes over the entire area using appropriate
equipment.
2. Monitor and measure compaction levels using surveying instruments.
3. Adjust the compaction process based on survey results.
4. Continue the compaction process until the required density is achieved.
Quality Control
1. Perform density tests at specified locations.
2. Record and document the results for verification.
3. Make any necessary adjustments to achieve uniform compaction.
Completion
1. Confirm that the entire area has been compacted according to specifications.
2. Submit a completion report with all necessary documentation to the Project
Manager.
