BARC Training School and Training Scheme Options

The Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates (OCES) of the BARC Training
Schools provide an opportunity to deserving candidates ambitious of pursuing a rewarding career in Nuclear
Science, Engineering and Technology.

Selection to OCES/DGFS-2023 is a two-step process:

1. Screening on the basis of online exam/ GATE Score/ CBS or NISER CGPA scor
and
2. Selection Interview for the screened in candidates.
The candidates shortlisted in the following OCES Exam/ Interview Discipline are required to fill up an option
form giving their preference for the various Training Scheme available in their respective Exam discipline.
i. Mechanical Engineering
ii. Chemical Engineering
iii. Electrical Engineering
iv. Electronics Engineering
v. Physics
vi. Chemistry
They are advised to login to the portal using link provided in mail /www.barcocesexam.in and fill in the option
form relevant for their Interview Discipline.
The candidates shortlisted for the remaining OCES Exam Disciplines are not required to fill any option form.
The following Table lists the various training schemes which will be provided to the selected candidates at the

It may be noted that Fast Reactor Technology- M (FRT-M), Fast Reactor Technology-E (FRT-E) and Radiological
Safety & Environmental Science (RSES), Nuclear Reactor Physics, Nuclear Fuel Cycle Chemistry as described below
are additional training schemes for which there will not be any separate Selection interview.

(1) Fast Reactor Technology- M (FRT-M): The Fast Reactor Technology- M (FRT-M) training Scheme is offered
at BARC Training School, IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The orientation of this training scheme would be towards
R&D and Engineering related to Fast Breeder Reactors. This course would give you a theoretical and practical
insight of operational features of a reactor, knowledge of plant systems, dynamics and capabilities to
troubleshoot, retrofit and handle emergencies. Expertise gained can subsequently transcend into evolving better
design, commissioning and regulatory activities. This course would also prepare the necessary ground for
obtaining qualification/license to operate the reactor in minimum time and also be the coursework for MTech
programme of HBNI, which will be awarded upon completion of project work after placement.
FRT-M Training Scheme option is available to applicants applying in Mechanical Engineering (ME) (Exam
discipline Codes 21) or applying in Chemical Engineering (CH) (Exam discipline Code 22).

(2) Fast Reactor Technology- E (FRT-E): The Fast Reactor Technology- E (FRT-E) training Scheme is offered at
BARC Training School, IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The The orientation of this training scheme would be
towards R&D and Engineering related to Fast Breeder Reactors. This course would give you a theoretical and
practical insight of operational features of a reactor, knowledge of plant systems, dynamics and capabilities to
troubleshoot, retrofit and handle emergencies.
FRT-E Training Scheme option is available to applicants applying in Electrical Engineering (EE) (Exam
discipline Codes 24) or Electronics Engineering (EC) (Exam discipline Code 25).

(3) Radiological Safety & Environmental Science (RSES): Radiological Safety & Environmental Science (RSES)
training scheme, offered by BARC Training School, Mumbai is a unique course in the country to create technocrats
and scientists for safety of the public and environment, through continuous research. The course is designed to
provide in-depth knowledge in the field of radiological protection and environmental safety required at each and
every stage of the Nuclear Fuel Cycle starting from mining & milling of the Uranium ore, fuel fabrication, fuel
utilization in the nuclear reactors, re-processing of the spent fuel, to waste management of residual radioactive
material, and also in accelerators, medical application of radio isotopes, and use of radio isotopes in industrial as
well as agricultural fields.
The course work is divided in to foundation course, core courses, and elective courses. Some of the subjects
covered in foundation course are mathematical methods, Reactor Physics, Reactor engineering, Radiation
detection and related nuclear electronics, Radiation dosimetry etc. The core courses cover environmental science,
environmental modelling, operational radiation protection, accelerator physics and radiation safety, and
radiological safety analysis to name a few. Elective courses provide opportunity to develop further expertise in
some of the specialized areas such as nuclear and analytical techniques, radioactive waste management, medical
physics, applications of radioisotopes and application of radiation technologies in different fields.
RSES Training Scheme option to is available to applicants applying in Nuclear Engineering (NE) (Exam
discipline Code 29), Physics (PH) (Exam Code 41) and Chemistry disciplines (Exam discipline Code 42).
Please note that there is no separate Training Scheme called ‘Nuclear Engineering (Exam discipline Code
29) and selected candidates belonging to Nuclear Engineering (NE) (Exam discipline Code 29) will be allotted RSES
or Mechanical or Chemical as their Training Schemes based on the Committee recommendation.

(4) Nuclear Reactor Physics: Nuclear Reactor Physics training scheme is offered at BARC Training School,
IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu under Physics Discipline. This is a special course with emphasis related to R&D in
Reactor Physics, Shielding and Safety. The curriculum has very special topics in Reactor Physics, taught by expert
and experienced faculty that helps the candidate to directly plunge into taking up challenging problems/design
features of reactors immediately upon placement. Graduates from this discipline are sought after by all Units alike
considering the specialization.

(5) Nuclear Fuel Cycle Chemistry: Nuclear Fuel Cycle Chemistry training scheme is offered at BARC Training
School, IGCAR, Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu under Chemistry Discipline. This course has been designed taking into
consideration, the thrust of the Department in closing the fuel cycle and back-end fuel cycle activities. The course
enriches the candidates with respect to R&D in processing of nuclear materials including reprocessing even while
giving a practical approach to many of the basic chemistry concepts. This course is also taught by expert faculties
giving insights to actual problems/challenges encountered in back end of fuel cycle. Graduates from this course
find placements in Units with focus on back-end of fuel cycle.
