GENERAL DETAILS
Title: Dye Penetrant Inspection, Colour Contrast / Solvent Removable

Application: Welds, back gouges, preps, plate, pipe, cast and forged materials. (Note 1)

Operator Qualifications: PCN ASNT Level 2 General (or equivalent)


Material and surface condition: Any metallic material.
Surface to be free from surface contaminant which may affect the test.
Technique in Accordance with: ASME V 2010 and NDT-OPR-041 (see supervisor for latest revision).

Acceptance Criteria: To be specified prior to the commencement of test

TECHNIQUE ILLUSTRATION

1. Pre-clean with solvent moistened cloths and allow to dry by evaporation (min. 5 minutes)
2. Apply penetrant by spray or brush and leave for penetration time. Ensure that the penetrant does not dry during the dwell time.
This technique is to be used in the temperature range 10° to 52° C
3. Clean with dry and then solvent moistened cloths and allow to dry by evaporation (min. 5 minutes). Do not spray directly onto
the test surface as this may remove penetrant from a discontinuity
4. Apply developer evenly using aerosol spray and view immediately to detect areas of excessive bleed-out and then every 5
minutes. Development time commences immediately after the developer has dries.
5. Final acceptance only takes place after the development time.
6. View under lighting conditions > 1000 lux. If 500 lux agreed note on the test report.
7. Post cleaning to be carried out, if required, using solvent remover to ensure all trace of penetrant examination is removed.

Additional Instructions:
• (1) When testing welds ensure that 25mm from each weld toe is tested.
• Alternative penetrant family consumables may be used provided that they are equivalent in sensitivity and from the same family.
• Note any restrictions on the test report.
