NDT TECHNIQUE SHEET

Contract/Job No.: N/A Technique No.: NDT-TEC-U115C

GENERAL DETAILS
Title: Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement and Corrosion/Erosion detection and evaluation Repeat Echo Mode

Application:
Any material or product form
Qualifications: ASNT/PCN Level 2 UT thickness minimum, or Level 1 under supervision of level 2
Technique in Accordance with: BS EN 14127 2004 Mode 3 and NDT/OPR/029
Report as requested by client instruction. Guidance on assessment provided in Section 9 and Appendix 1
Acceptance Criteria:
of the procedure
Any metallic materials if calibration block available. Carbon steel blocks may be used if velocity of
Material Type:
material under test is known
EQUIPMENT AND CALIBRATION
Calibration Blocks: IIW V1 or V2 or suitable step wedge Reference Blocks Not applicable

Couplant Cellulose Paste or equivalent. Probe Leads: Standard lemo connectors

Probes: 0º, 10mm diameter, 5MHz twin crystal, longitudinal. Smaller diameter probes to be used where item

diameter restricts the test. Shear wave 45º, 4 Mhz 10mm diameter may be used to confirm indications.

The procedure provides further guidance.

Sensitivity: First Back wall echo (BWE) to 80% full screen height (FSH). Additional gain may be required to adjust

signal from item under test to 80% FSH. Additional gain may be required to assess the item under test

(e.g. to confirm and assess pitting)

TECHNIQUE AND SCANNING ILLUSTRATION

Scans or points recorded in line with client instruction, scanning patterns workpacks etc
1. Select a calibration block or step (assumed to be bare metal) suitable for the thickness range being examined

2. Place the probe on the chosen calibration step and using at least two back wall echoes, calibrate the time base to the required range (i.e. 0-
10mm, 0-25mm, 0-50mm...etc).

3. Place the probe on the item to be examined and, using the delay control only, move the first BWE to a suitable graticule mark (preferably a
major division) and note the position along the time base.

4. Do not readjust the delay; increase the amplitude of the second BWE to correspond to the height of the first BWE when its position was
noted. Use the same section of the waveform i.e peak to peak or leading edge to leading edge.

Thickness of sample
5. The thickness of the material is the distance from the noted position of the 1 st BWE to the position of the 2nd BWE at the new amplitude,
measured along the time base as shown in the figure above.

6. Carry out the survey or test in accordance with the client's requirements.

7. Record thickness readings obtained and report in accordance with client requirements.

Additional Instructions:
 A-scan equipment to be used.
 Check the calibration over the full range on all available steps, if errors of + 2% over the calibrated range are noted, the equipment time
base linearity must be checked prior to testing.
 Note test restrictions such as any coatings, temperature or velocity variations that may introduce errors in the readings obtained.
 Report on the day of inspection where possible.
