MASTER ME
MELC: Illustrates events, and union and intersection of events.

❖ Life is full of random events!

❖ You need to get a "feel" for them to be a smart and successful person.
❖ The toss of a coin, throw of a dice and lottery draws are all examples of random
events.

Activities such as rolling a die, tossing a coin, and lottery draws could be repeated
over and over again and which have well-defined results are called experiments.
The results of an experiment are called outcomes.
The set of all outcomes in an experiment is called a sample space.
An event is a subset of the sample space.
Any event which consists of a single outcome in the sample space is called an
elementary or simple event.
Events which consist of more than one outcome are called compound events. A
compound event consists of two or more simple events.

Union of Events - an event is something that has happened and is always associated with
an experiment.

Intersection of Events means that all the events are occurring together. Even if one event
holds false all will be false. The intersection of events can only be true if and only if all the
events hold true.

The figure below shows the union and intersection for different configurations of two
events in a sample space, using Venn diagrams.

The unions and intersections of different events. Note that in the middle column the
intersection, A∩B is empty since the two sets do not overlap. In the final column the
union, A∪B, is equal to A and the intersection, A∩B is equal to B since B is fully contained
in A.

ACT ON
Tell whether the event is SIMPLE or COMPOUND. Write the answer on the space
provided.
__________ 1. Drawing the ace of hearts from a deck of cards.
__________ 2. Rolling an even number less than 5 on a die.
__________ 3. Getting a sum of 10 in a toss of 2 dice
__________ 4. Getting a hand of 8 cards consisting of 3 aces and 5 face cards from a
deck of cards
__________ 5. Tossing a head with a penny

TRY MORE
Given the counting numbers from 1 to 20, list down the elements of the following:
1. A = {even numbers} = {________________________}
2. B = {odd numbers} = {________________________}
3. C = {composite numbers} = {________________________}
4. D = {even and composite numbers} = {________________________}
5. E = {odd and prime numbers} = {________________________}
