STATISTIC AND PROBABILITY

ASSIGNMENT #6:
EXERCISES:
A. State whether the z-score locates the raw score X within a sample
or within a population.

1. X = 50, s = 5, and x̄ = 40
SOLUTION:
x−x̄
Z= s
50−40
Z= 5
10
Z= 5
∨2

2. X = 40, σ =8 , μ=52
SOLUTION:
x−μ
Z= σ
40−52
Z= 8
−12
Z= 8 reduce the fraction with 4
−3
Z= 2 or – 1.5

3. X = 36, s = 6, x̄ = 28
SOLUTION:
x−x̄
Z= s
36−28
Z= 6
8
Z= 4 reduce the fraction with 2
4
Z= 3
∨1.3

4. X = 74, s = 10, x̄ = 60
SOLUTION:
x−x̄
Z= s
74−60
Z= 10
14
Z= 10 reduce the fraction with 2
7
Z= 5
∨1.4

5. X = 82, σ =15 , μ=75

SOLUTION:
x−μ
Z= σ
82−75
Z= 15
7
Z= 15 or 0.46
B. From the exercise A, state whether each raw score lies below or
above the mean.

1. X = 2

2. X = -1.5

3. X = 1.3
4. X = 1.4

5. X = 0.46
C. Given x̄ = 62 and s = 8, find the z-score up to two decimals places
that corresponds to each of the following raw scores.
1. X = 70
SOLUTION:
x−x̄
Z= s
70−62
Z= 8
8
Z= 8
∨1

2. X = 78
SOLUTION:
x−x̄
Z= s
78−62
Z= 8
16
Z= ∨¿2
8

3. X = 82
SOLUTION:
x−x̄
Z= s
82−62
Z= 8
20
Z= 8 divide by 4
5
Z= 2
∨2.5

4. X = 50
SOLUTION:
x−x̄
Z= s
50−62
Z= 8
−12
Z= 8
∨−1.5

5. X = 42

SOLUTION:
x−x̄
Z= s
42−62
Z= 8
−20
Z= 8 divide by 4
−5
Z= 2
∨−2.5

D. Suppose you have the population values 50 and 80 and their

corresponding z-scores are -1 and 2, respectively. Is it possible to
determine the population’s mean and standard deviation? If so,
what are these values? If not, explain why it is impossible.

GIVEN:
The population value is 50 and 80 and the z-score are -1 and 2.
SOLUTION:
X 1 =50 X 2 =80

X 2 −X 1 = 80 – 50
= 30
FOR STANDARD DEVIATION:
Z1 =−1 Z 2=2

Z 2−Z 1=¿ -1–2

=-3
FOR POPULATION MEAN:
M = X 1 −2 Z
= 50 – 2(-3)
= 56
STANDARD DEVIATION: - 3
POPULATION MEAN: 56

EXTENSION:

1. For the year 2011, find out the average performance of all
grade 6 Filipino learner in mathematics in the national
Achievement test.
ANSWER:
 Grade 6 performance average are 66.8%

2. Suppose a sample school has a mean performance of 50 and a

standard deviation of 7, how would you describe its
performance with respect to the national average?
ANSWER:
 I describe its performance with respect to national average to
appreciate there all effort to achieve that national average.
