Vehicle Engineering and Design Practice

Prerequisites:
• Knowledge of Electrical Engineering concepts
• Familiarity with Engineering Drawings
• Knowledge of any 3D CAD tool (such as Creo, UG-NX, Catia)
• Knowledge of any EDA Software (such as Mentor Graphics, Capital XC)

Objective:
The objective of this course is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to
work on Electrical Product Engineering for Automotive applications.

Expected outcome from the course:


Develop understanding in following areas-
• How to apply Electrical engineering knowledge to Automotive world.
• Different types of Wiring harnesses used in Automotive applications.
• Topology and Schematics used in Automotive Wiring harnesses.
• Size calculations related to High & Low voltage wiring harnesses.
• Manufacturing and Assembly processes used in wiring harnesses.
• Electrical components selection.
• Routing High and Low voltage wiring harnesses using CAD tool.
• Different software’s used to design the Automotive wiring harness.

o Wires
o Connectors and Terminals
o Protective sleeves
o Fuse and relay

2. Wiring harness design and drawings:


o Requirement understanding
o Vehicle level E/E Architecture
o Wiring harness topology and Schematic
o Load calculations
o Wire specifications
o Environmental conditions
o Mechanical properties
o Selection of materials
o Earthing requirements
o Wiring harness diagrams

3. Wire Harness Manufacturing Process:


o Wire Materials
o Wire Cutting
o Stripping and Connections
o Crimping
o Insulation
o Assembly & Testing

4. Use of Software to design Wiring harness:


a. Graphical environment for creating harness.
b. Routing of harness in physical space
c. Wire & cable harness layouts
d. Formboard drawings

5. Practical projects:
a. Wiring harness design in Mentor graphics or Capital XC
b. Cable sizing and selection, Voltage drop calculation for Automotive applications.

6. Industrial Visits:
a. Visit to Wiring harness manufacturing plant.
b. Visit to any Automotive vehicle manufacturing plant.
