Integrated Change Management

• Since projects are dynamic in nature,

change is inevitable. Therefore,
having tools in place to manage the
change is critical to project success.
• Additional factors include:
• Determining that a change has
occurred
• Determining change impact
• Managing the actual changes
when and if they occur – updating
the plan

Integrated Change Management

• Changes to any one aspect of the

project, such as scope, must be
considered in light of all the other
areas of knowledge for impacts
before being accepted.

Integrated Change Management

• Ranking changes by value can

assist in choosing only those that
are necessary. For example, a
change request for additional
features or functionality in an
internal software program may be
integrated into future releases
rather than slowing down the current
project.

Integrated Change Management

• Changes to any one area of

knowledge must be integrated into
the total change control process to
ensure the big picture is considered
for each change.

Integrated Change Management

• The change control process will

also assist in detecting changes
that are not submitted as requests.
These changes can be schedule
slippages and cost overruns. Both
are changes to the project plan and
must be addressed. These types of
changes are detected by comparing
work results with project plans. Any
variance to the plan is considered a
change and must be analyzed to
determine the impact on the
project’s end date or the customer’s
level of satisfaction.

Integrated Change Management

• Project documents updates

• Project scope statement updates –

approved changes are reflected in
the scope statement
• WBS updates – changes that affect
the project scope will require
adjustments to the WBS
• WBS dictionary updates – additional
supporting information may be
required in the WBS dictionary
• Scope baseline updates
