4. Equipment Description
A. Mechanical Description (Refer to figure 3.)
The 562C-8( ) is housed in a 1/4-ATR short, low case with a slide-on dust cover
held at the rear by a captive screw. High power dissipating components in the
562C-8( ) are mounted on a centered aluminum chassis section. Plug-in planar
circuit boards A1 and A3 plug into each side of the centered aluminum chassis
section. The angular accelerometer is located at the rear of the unit to take
advantage of the lower vibration levels. The power transformer is located at the
extreme front of the unit to keep heat away from the angular accelerometer. Con-
figuration module A4 plugs into the two planar circuit cards (A1 and A3) through
an opening in the front panel.
The 562C-8( ) is mounted in a standard 1/4-ATR short mount or in an aircraft
equipment rack conforming to ARINC Specification No 404. All electrical connec-
tions are made through a single connector at the rear of the unit. Cooling is
through natural convection.
B. Electrical Description
The 562C-8( ) consists of three basic sections: a computation section, a servo
amplifier section, and a configuration section. The computation section produces
a rudder command signal by analog processing of data from the vertical reference,
the airspeed sensor, and the internal angular accelerometer. With the exception
of the angular accelerometer, the computation section is contained on plug-in
planar circuit board A1.
The servo-amplifier section amplifies the rudder command to drive the rudder
primary servo. All the components for the voltage amplification, torque limiting,
and fail-safe monitoring circuits of the servo-amplifier section are contained on
plug-in planar circuit board A3. The components for the power amplification cir-
cuit of the servo-amplifier section are mounted on the centered aluminum chassis.
Terminal board (CPN 608-8479-001) is used in 562C-8A Yaw Damper Computers
with MCN 200 and above. The terminal board (CPN 797-2362-001) is used in
562C-8A Yaw Damper Computers with MCN 199 and below. The two servo ampli-
fier terminal boards are not interchangeable between units in the two defined MCN
groups.
Configuration module A4 contains gain adjust and torque limit resistors that tailor
the yaw damper computer response to particular aircraft characteristics.

reducing, rectifying, and regulating the 115-Vac 400-Hz input power. Components
to perform this function are mounted on the chassis assembly.
5. Theory of Operation
A. Introduction
The 562C-8( ) Yaw Damper Computer is part of the FCS-105 Flight Control Sys-
tem and provides the yaw stabilization for the aircraft. The yaw damper computer
senses angular acceleration and derives a yaw rate signal that is combined with
roll data and indicated airspeed to produce a rudder command signal. The rudder
command signal is applied to a servo amplifier to drive the rudder primary servo.

The yaw damper system can be engaged through a separate engage switch on the
614E-5A Autopilot Controller for independent yaw stabilization. When the auto-
pilot is engaged, the yaw damper system is automatically engaged.
The yaw damper computer generates the rudder command signal from two
basic input signals; the yaw acceleration signal from the angular accelerometer
and roll data from the vertical reference.
The angular accelerometer in the yaw damper computer senses the angular
acceleration of the aircraf t. The output signal of the angular accelerometer
is filtered to eliminate high-frequency noise and de standoff. The output of
the filter circuit is a yaw rate signal limited between the frequencies of 0.04
and 1.07 Hz.
Roll data from the vertical reference is used to derive rudder coordination
signal. The roll data is demodulated to give a de voltage with polarity and
amplitude dependent on the roll input phase and amplitude. The roll rate
coordination de voltage signal is gain scheduled with true airspeed, high-
pass filtered, and gain adjusted to provide the proper mixing ratio with the
yaw rate signal. The gain scheduled signal is mixed with the yaw rate sig-
nal to provide the proper roll rate component in the rudder command
signal.
The mixed roll coordination and yaw rate signal is gain scheduled with in-
dicated airspeed and amplitude limited.
When the yaw damper system is disengaged, any rudder command signal
appearing at the output of the command limiter is reduced to zero by the
synchronizer at a time constant of 2 milliseconds. Because the.time constant
of the servo motor is 20 milliseconds, virtually no movement occurs during
synchronization. The servo loop is driven to zero and remains at zero until
the yaw damper is engaged.
When the yaw damper is engaged, synchronization stops. The rudder com-
mand signal stored on the synchronizer at the time of engagement decays to
zero through feedback constant K at a time constant of 2 seconds. This pro-
vides full rudder command gain at the time of engagement in a transient-
free manner.

The rudder command signal derived from roll rate and yaw rate data is fed to
the servo amplifier where it is amplified and amplitude limited to keep the
primary servo torque with the limits of the aircraft design. The signal from
the servo amplifier is then fed to the primary servo motor which controls the
rudder.
A rate generator is coupled to the primary servo motor. When the servo
amplifier drives the primary servo motor, the rate generator produces a de
voltage with polarity dependent on the direction of rotation of the primary
servo-motor shaft. This de voltage rate feedback from the primary servo is
returned to the servo amplifier. In the servo amplifier, the rate feedback
signal is integrated and added to the rudder command signal.
The integrated rate feedback signal polarity is opposite that of the rudder
command signal. Thus, when the rate feedback signal has been applied to the
integrator for sufficient time, the output of the integrator will be equal to the
rudder command signal but of opposite polarity. When the integrated rate
feedback signal and the rudder command signal are added, they cancel and the
primary servo drive is removed.
The rudder command signal derived from roll rate and yaw rate data is
amplified by the servo amplifier and fed to the linear actuator. A potentio-
meter coupled to the linear actuator is connected as a.voltage divider. The
voltage at the potentiometer wiper contact is proportional to the position of the
linear actuator shaft. Any change in shaft position produces a proportional
voltage change at the potentiometer wiper. This position proportional voltage
change is amplified in the servo amplifier and added to the rudder command
signal. Since the amplified position voltage has polarity opposite the rudder
command, the two signals cancel and the linear actuator drive is removed.
The 562C-8A provides fail-safe monitoring to disengage the yaw damper sys-
tem if a failure occurs in the yaw damper computer. Monitoring is performed
by two comparator circuits that feed an AND circuit. Both comparators
indirectly monitor the +28-Vde and 115-Vac power sources and directly moni-
tor the servo-amplifier operation. The outputs from the comparators are
ANDed together to drive the yaw damper engage relay. If there is a failure,
one of the comparator outputs falls to zero, the output of the AND circuit
falls to zero, and the yaw damper engage relay disengages.
The 562C-8B does not require fail-safe monitoring because it drives a linear
servo with limited rudder movement capability. A simpler end-stop monitor
circuit is used in the 562C-8B.

The yaw damper system can be engaged independently of the autopilot system
and is not dependent upon the proper configuration control board being
installed in the autopilot amplifier.
The gain produced by U3 and U4 is scheduled by Ql, Ull, and Ul3 to com-
pensate the rudder command signal for different airspeeds. An airspeed
proportional de voltage from the airspeed sensor and a triangular ac reference
voltage from Ul3 are combined in Ull. The resultant output from Ull is a
square wave with a duty cycle determined by the voltage from the airspeed
sensor. Q1, driven by Ull, periodically shorts the output of U3, thereby
reducing the effective gain of U3.
Roll data from the vertical reference is a 400-Hz ac voltage with phase
depending on right or left bank and with amplitude depending on angle of bank.
This signal is compared to the reference 400-Hz voltage and demodulated by
U7 and U8. The output from U7 is a de voltage with polarity depending on
right or left bank and with amplitude depending on angle of barik. A gain
scheduling circuit composed of Q2, Ul2, and Ul3 controls the input level to
U9 just as Q1, Ull, and Ul3 control the input level to U4. After gain schedul-
ing, the signal is amplified by U9 and fed to Ul4-Ul0. Ul4 is a unity gain
amplifier. Ul0 is an integrator with a time constant determined by the resis-
tor selected for A4R3. The output from Ul4 is applied to the input of Ulo.
Integration of the Ul4 output produces an inverted voltage that opposes the
roll data signal at the input of Ul4. The combination of Ul4 and Ul0 forms a
high-pass filter with a time constant selected for the particular aircraft. The
roll data signal from Ul4 is routed to the input of U3 for mixing with the
angular accelerometer signal.

The synchronization circuit is used only when the yaw damper computer is
disengaged. Removal of the engage mode voltage at A1P1 pin 10 turns Q3 off
and switches U6. The rudder command signal at the output of U4 is then
integrated by U5 and applied to the input of U3. There it cancels the angular
acceleration and roll command signals; this causes the rudder command sig-
nal at the output of U4 to go to zero. When the engage mode voltage is applied
to A1P1 pin 10, the integrator is disconnected from the rudder command
signal and discharged.
Besides interconnecting wiring from the main plug to the plug-in boards,
chassis A2 also contains the angular accelerometer, the ±12-Vde power
supply, and the final stage of the servo amplifier.
The 562C-8A/8B Yaw Damper Computer uses a fluid type angular acceler-
ometer as the yaw axis sensor. The accelerometer consists of a dc torque
motor in a servo loop which zeros a small paddle assembly in a circular
tube of fluid. Angular acceleration causes a force on the paddle. This force
is opposed by the torque motor. The current through the torque motor is
sensed and amplified to provide an output voltage signal proportional to the
angular acceleration.
Except for the +28-Vde power, all the de power is developed from 115 Vac.
The 115 Vac is stepped down by T1 then rectified and regulated to supply +12
Vdc, -12
Vde, -24
The first stage of the servo amplifier is made up of Ul, U2, and U3. U2 is an
integrator that produces an output level proportional to the primary servo
degrees of rotatiòn. This output is the position change signal. The position
change signal from U2 and the rudder command signal from computation
board Al are added and amplified by U3. Torque washout feedback from U3 to
U2 is accomplished by buffer amplifier Ul. This feedback from U3 slowly
cancels the input to U3 until the output of U3 is zero.
Besides supplying the signal input to Ul, U3 also supplies the input signal to
the servo power amplifiers. The servo power amplifiers are composed of

U5, U6, US, U9, and Q1 through Q12 on servo amplifier board A3 plus Ql
through Q4 on chassis assembly A2.
To limit the maximum torque that will be applied to the rudder, the servo
amplifier contains an amplitude limiter circuit. Two voltage regulators, U4
and U7, are the major components of the limiter. A separate regulator sup-
plies the second stage of each side of the push-pull servo amplifier. The
maximum output level of the second stage of each side of the amplifier is
determined by the output of the associated regulator. Therefore, the ampli-
tude of the servo amplifier is limited by the voltage output of the regulators.
The voltage regulator outputs are determined by the value of torque limit
resistors (R4/R5) on the configuration module A4.
Output current to the servo motor develops voltages across the current sens-
ing resistors A2R9 and A2R10. These voltages are applied between the two
differential inputs to U6 and U9. Here they reduce the gain of U6 and U9; this
lowers the drive to the output stages and maintains the output current at a
safe level.
The 562C-8A fail-safe monitoring circuit disengages the yaw damper system
if a failure occurs in the yaw damper computer. Comparator Ul0 is used
to detect a failure in the servo amplifier or power supply. The inputs to Ul0
are a 400-Hz reference voltage and a differential voltage from servo-
amplifier amplitude limiter voltage regulators U4 and U7.

Each side of the push-pull servo amplifier has an amplitude limiter that is
connected to a separate voltage regulator. Power for regulator U7 is supplied
by the +28-Vde source; power for regulator U4 is supplied by rectifying the
115-Vac 400-Hz source. A failure in one of the regulators or the power sup-
plies drops the regulator output voltage. A drop in one regulator output volt-
age and not the other results in a differential voltage to comparator Ul0.
In a no-fault condition, when the voltage differential between the voltage regu-
lator outputs is zero, the 400-Hz reference voltage is amplified and then
rectified. When a fault occurs, the voltage differential to the comparator is
great enough to block amplification of the 400-Hz reference voltage. The out-
put voltage from the rectifier is zero in the fault condition and some finite de
level in the no-fault condition.
The outputs of the rectifiers associated with comparators Ul0 and Ull are
connected to two AND circuits that control relay Kl. If there is no fault in
either the power supplies or the servo amplifier, Kl supplies power to the
yaw damper engage relay in the control unit.
CR11, CR12, Q17, and Q18 form one AND circuit. If one of the rectified com-
parator voltages drops, Q18 turns off. This removes the engaging ground
supplied at P1-30 by the autopilot engage circuit. Removing the engaging
ground disengages the yaw damper relay by two methods. First, the yaw
damper solenoid ground at P1-28 is removed. Second, Q19 is turned off so
the +28-Vdc power to the yaw damper solenoid is removed from P1-29. The
second AND circuit formed by CR7, CR8, Q14, and Q15 performs disengage-
ment if the first AND circuit fails. Due to the loss of one of the rectified
comparator voltages, Q15 turns off removing the ground from relay Kl. Thus
power is removed from the yaw damper solenoid.
The first stage (U1) of the servo amplifier is an amplitude limiting buffer
amplifier. At the input to U2, the rudder command signal from U1 and the

servo-position signal from U7 are added. The combined signal (U1 plus U7) is
amplified to drive the linear actuator by U2 through U4 on servo-amplifier
board A3 and Ql through Q8 on chassis assembly A2.
When the yaw damper computer self-test is being performed, the servo-
position signal must be reduced. To do this, R16 is switched into the circuit
between U7 and U2 by analog switch U6. At the same time, U6 applies a
voltage to the accelerometer to produce a self-test rudder command that
drives the linear actuator to the end stop. Ql through Q5 form a latching
NAND circuit that drives U6. The NAND circuit inhibits the operation of U6
until both the self--test voltage at P1-32 and the engage mode voltage at P1-20
are present.
To protect the linear actuator, the yaw damper computer disengages the yaw
damper system if the linear actuator reaches its end stop. At either end of
the linear actuator travel, a positive voltage is applied to pin 21 of Pl. If the
drive from the servo amplifier is not removed, the voltage at P1-21 will
remain until C2 charges enough to turn Q6 on. When Q6 turns on, Q7 turns
off and Kl is deenergized; power is removed from the yaw damper engage
solenoid in the control unit, and the yaw damper system is disengaged until
manually reengaged.
The command resistor (Rl) is the gain determining resistor for U4 on compu-
tation board A1. This resistor value determines the gain of U4 and therefore
the level of rudder command for a given angular acceleration.
The coordination resistor (R2) is connected between the output of A1U14 and
the input to A1U3. This resistor value determines the ratio of high-pass roll
signal to angular accelerometer signal that will be applied to the input of
A1U3.
The time constant resistor (R3) is connected between the output of A114 and
the input of A1Ul0. This resistor value determines the time constant of the
roll signal high-pass filter that in turn determines the roll signal application
time.

Transistors should be a minimum of 0.04 inch (1 mm) off the board
so solder does not flow up the leads and short to base. Trim the
lead to approximately 0.04 inch (1 mm) from the board.
3_. Apply heat to lead and thru hole and apply solder. Thru hole should
be completely filled with solder that has flowed around component
lead.
5. Wash area with a piper cleaner that has been dipped in one of the
recommended cleaning solvents.
6. Use pipe cleaner to spread thick film of coating paste over entire
repaired area with circuit board in horizontal position. Allow to dry
at least 2 hours.
(a) Use pipe cleaner to spread thick film of coating paste to replaced com-
ponent, mounting pads, and to both sides of thru holes. Ensure that com-
plete coverage is obtained and the new coating overlaps existing coating
on adjacent areas of board.
NOTE: RTV 3140 dries tack free in 2 hours and fully cures in about 5
days. For small repair jobs, the circuit board can be returned
to service after tack-free drying has occurred. Allow longer
cure time if large areas of the circuit board have been recoated.

TESTING
1. Introduction
The test procedures are in flow diagram format beginning with figure 703, and are
described in paragraph 3. The test equipment and power requirements are summarized
in paragraph 2.
A. Test Equipment
Refer to the Special Tools, Fixtures, and Equipment section of this manual for a
list of test equipment required to test the 562C-8( ) Yaw Damper Computer. In-
structions for building the test fixture are in Collins publication entitled "FCS-105
Component Test Fixture Instruction Book," Collins part number 523-0764382.
The cables required to connect the 562C-8( ) to the test fixture are described in
figures 1002 and 1003 of this manual.
Ensure that all test equipment is properly calibrated. The test bench must be
rigid for the successful completion of all tests on the 562C-8( ). If the unit is
moved (bumped, jolted, rocked), the output voltage will rise sharply (depending
on the acceleration) and will require at least 2 minutes to stabilize to a suitable
reference level.
B. Power Requirements
(1) +28 (+26to +30) volts de, 6.0 amperes minimum, 200 mV ripple maximum.
(2) 115 (105 to 125) volts ac, 0.5 ampere maximum, 400 (380 to 420) hertz,
single-phase.
(3) -12 (-11.6 to -12.4) volts do, 0.5 ampere maximum, 50 mV ripple maximum.
3. Test Procedure
A. General
The test proceduresare in flow diagram format. The blocks connected by the wide
lines are descriptive of the action required by the test. Instructions unique to the
test fixture are in the blocks to the right of the descriptive blocks and are con-
nected to them by a dashed line.

B. Philosophy
The test procedures are separated by figure number with one figure for each
functional area of the 562C-8( ). This allows you to enter the procedure at a
number of points other than the beginning of the first test. If your interpretation
of the failure report leads you to suspect a problem in the servo amplifier (for
example) you can begin with the servo amplifier test first, rather than use valuable
time in the possible unnecessary testing of the computation function.
The test procedures include suggestions on possible causes for test failure. These
suggestions are generally found in the blocks leading from a "verify" block on
"no-go" side. After a unit is repaired, the entire procedure should be performed,
with the minimum performance test last.
When a unit is removed from service for scheduled periodic maintenance, perform
all the test procedures. This provides a record of the validated operational condi-
tion of the unit.
C. Troubleshooting Procedures
The troubleshooting procedures are contained within the test procedures. The
suggestions for possible causes of a test failure will generally identify three or
less active components. It is understood that the failure, if it is indeed located in
that area, can also be due to a passive component.
D. Test Procedure, General Instructions
(1) Ensure that all test equipment is properly calibrated. This applies particu-
larly to the sensors (voltohmmeters, ammeters) and most especially to the
scope, if it is to be used for the response tests. The relatively slow sweep
rates required by some of those tests requires a precisely calibrated hori-
zontal sweep rate. It is for this reason that an X-Y recorder is preferred
for the response tests.
(2) Figure 701 is the general test setup diagram for both the 562C-8( ) Yaw
Damper Computer, and the 562C-5 Autopilot Amplifier. This drawing identi-
fies the two interconnecting cables required for each unit as well as showing
how the peripheral equipment and power sources are connected to the test
fixture. Only one of the synchro sources is required for 562C-8( ) testing
and that one should be connected to the SYNR2 input jacks.
Refer to the FCS-105 Component Test Fixture Instruction Book, Collins part
number 523-0764382, for more detailed information on the test fixture.
(3) Figure 702 is the 562C-8( ) pretest procedure. This figure is referenced at
the beginning of each of the detailed test procedures. It is not applicable to
the minimum performance test.

(4) Figure 703 is the minimum performance test for the 562C-8A Yaw Damper
Computer, while figure 704 is the same test for the 562C-8B. This test is to
be performed for the following reasons:
(c) As a preliminary test when the failure report does not identify a possible
problem area.
Figure 705 is the chassis circuits test for the 562C-8A, and figure 706 is the
same test for the 562C-8B. The special hookups required for figure 705 are
shown on figure 707.
Figure 708 is the servo amplifier board, detailed test for the 562C-8A and
figure 709 is the same test for the 562C-8B. The test setups involved in
these tests are shown in figures 712 and 713, respectively.
Figure 710 is the computation board test for both the 562C-8A and 562C-8B.
The setup drawing for this test is figure 711,

LIGHT OVERHAUL
There is no recommended overhaul period for this equipment. The operational status of
equipment prematurely removed from service is determined by the minimum performance
test (refer to Testing section). Results obtained determine the extent of repair necessary
to return the equipment to a serviceable condition. The Disassembly section allows com--
ponent removal to the extent necessary to effect repair without complete teardown and re-
build. When repairs and reassembly are complete, the equipment is retested to ensure
the equipment is fully operational.

TROUBLE TIPS
A. In this test there is no drive current applied to any of the transistors, and the
meter is connected to the emitter of Q2. A voltage other than zero, here, indicates
that either Q2 or Q6 is on or CR12 is shorted.
On the other hand, a shorted Q4 and/or Q3 will also ensure a zero voltage indica-
tion ät this point.
B. Now the meter is on the other side of the test fixture load resistor. A voltage
other than zero, here, indicates that either Q1 or Q5 is on or CR11 is shorted.
HoWever, if Q3 and Q7 are shorted, a zero indication is likely.
C. A voltage other than zero in step 2 indicates a bad Q5. However, if both Q5 and Q7
are shorted, the reading will also be zero, and the test fixture fuse is likely to burn
out. If the reading is near +28 Vde, check Q5 for short.
In step 3, +12 Vde is applied through 1 kilohm to J2-33, this turns Q1 on. If Q7 is
shorted, the reading at J2-33 will be zero, and the test fixture fuse will likely burn
out.
In step 4, Q5 is turned on to give a +28 Vdc reading. Check Q5 if the voltage does
not appear.
D. A voltage less than +12 Vde, in this test, indicates a shorted Q3.
E. A voltage less than +12 Vde, in this test, indicates a shorted Q4.
F. No +28 this test indicates a bad Q2 and/or Q6.
Vdc in
G. After a successful step 7, this test is intended to verify that Q3 and Q7 are not
shorted. If the voltage read is near zero, check these two transistors and CR13
for s13ort.
H. In this test Q7 and Q3 are turned on to give the zero indication. If the +28 Vde
from step 8 does not change, check both transistors for open.
J. In this test Q5 and Q1 are turned on to give the +28 Vde indication. Check Q5 and
Q1 if the voltage does not appear.
K. After a successful step 11, this test is intended to verify that Q4 and Q3 are not
shorted. If the voltage read is near zero, check these two transistors and CR14
for short.
L. In this test Q4 is turned on to give the zero indication. If the +28 Vdc from step 13
does not change, check Q4 for open.
M. In this test Q3 is turned on to give the zero indication. If the +28 Vdc from step
13 does not change, check Q3 for open.
